The Astell and Kern AK240 Impressions Thread

How much of an upgrade in sonics between the two units?

I'll preface my response by saying my primary motivation for getting the AK380 was support of higher resolution files than what the AK240 supported (i.e. DXD). Otherwise I was very content with what I experienced with the AK240. Probably a foolish reason to spend so much money on the AK380 (even at a substantial sale price savings). I haven't had the AK380 very long but my initial impression is that the AK380 is better, but with only subtle improvements over the AK240 The primary difference that I hear is the way the sound stage is presented. It seems that everything is a little more well defined, in it's own space, with more air surrounding them. More transparent, detailed? Maybe I'll hear more over time (though it will be difficult to compare directly once my AK240 is hopefully sold!). If what I said so far seems like a luke-warm appraisal of the differences, I certainly enjoy what I'm hearing but I'm always a little leery about succumbing to "shiny new toy" syndrome and raving about new purchases.

Has anyone heard if there will be a firmware upgrade soon for the AK 240 that will allow us to stream Qobuz? Qobuz is currently listed in the AK 240 “store” but it won’t open up.

I have an AK 240 that I am very happy with. The only problem is that there hasn’t been an OTA update for some. It would be nice if we could add Qobuz to our AK 240, Jason, can we get Qobuz for our AK 240 please?

You are joking, right? They barely upgrade the SP1000 anymore. The 240 is a hundred years old in DAP terms. Be happy the battery still works. :)

Just wondering. Can you stream Qobuz on your SP1000? Too bad that older models are no longer updated.

I don't believe in streaming. I'm a 16/44 or 24/x files kinda guy. :)

Keep in mind as well that AK engineers are working remotely, so things are moving very slowly even for current models. And at this point, my SP1000 is over 3 years old and is no longer even close to being "modern." Your 240 is ancient.

Even MacBooks as old as 2013 can be updated to the latest Big Sur OS. Still not sure why AK wouldn’t consider updating a 2014 AK 240 model. Probably just a company decision I’m thinking.

Did anyone try connecting the AK240 to the AK380 amp module? both use micro usb connectors so theoretically it could work - but I wonder if anyone tried.

Not possible. The OS must also enable the amp for it to function. AK300 series has this selection in the menu but not the AK240.
