China is not the most free of countries and usually insists that things be done, at least in large part, their way.  It would be interesting to compare an Austrian made K 240 Studio (which folks were still getting as late as last year) with mine or another made in China.  Comparing the build and material quality of my 240 to a significantly less expensive Superlux HD668B, also made in China, they are essentially the same.  I can't see my 240 withstanding 5 or 10 years of studio use and abuse like the old ones could (or so I have heard).
 
 

Those K240s appear to be lower in price, compared to the the Q701 I'm looking at getting, how good are these (made in China) K240s, compared to the Q701?

My 601s are easily a class above in every way.  I can't really think of a reason to go with them over a Q701 other than to save money eg. for an amp.  If you start talking vintage K240 then that is another matter....
 
The K240S is nice for the price but not the best.  It does have its strengths though.

They're competitive in the just under $100 class.  They are, however, a far cry from the Q701.

My K702s are about 10 months old and are made in Austria.

Tested my K242HD on an Xonar DG, sounded really nice.
The K240/242 appears to be a cheaper alternative to the Sennheiser HD558.

In the 70's only the very well off audiophile (or show off) types powered their headphones with anything but a receiver--or occasionally an amp and preamp.  In those days receivers were designed to power headphones.  That's far less true today--and almost certainly not the case with a $300 receiver--even less for a $300 A/V receiver.

I don't know about the portables, but the Q 701 is the flagship of the line--and may be the last can still made in Austria (at least for now).
 
From what I have seen, all the QJ cans are based on existing AKG headphones that are tweaked and may also include extra accessories that the regular line does not include.

Good mids and highs too of coarse. But known to play good sub bass.
 
I collect earbuds.
I own a set of Technics 1200 DJ headphones.
But I want to add a good set of cans to my collection and interested in the AKG's

The AKG K242HD's go for $107, from Thomann in Europe, the bass is decent.
It's $40 shipping to the USA, but you can buy more stuff from them and the shipping is still $40.
I bought 2 headphones and 3 Velour ear pads from Thomann, for $245, wound have cost me $365 here in the USA.
