Does anyone know of an effective way to test the output level of headphones? I want to make sure the level is not damaging my ears.

Use a Sound Preassure Level (SPL) meter to measure output decibels. I own the CM-130.

I tried using an SPL app on my android phone.
The app claims that my home, at night is just as loud as a busy street at 10 am.
Useless to say the least.
(I think the mic in the phone switches between sensitivity settings)

Get a $20 SPL meter at Radio Shack. Pull up the OSHA chart where it shows what sound levels are acceptable in the workplace and the time limits.

Really love my SPL meter I got from Radioshack. I believe they now only sell the digital version that's now more expensive. These things are nice for calibrating a home theater system too. Totally worth the money.

I use the soundmeter app for my iPhone. Seems to get the job done although I'm sure the acutal SPL meters will be much more accurate.

I will not be buying the Radio Shack digital meter. Everyone I talk to says the older analog meter is much easier to use and was cheaper.
