How would the SHR840 compare against the SR325i? I am looking for something portable to plug in to my iphone. Are the shure much smaller? and how does the sound compare? I listen to rock, acoustic and hip hop. I am very pleased with the SR325i but want something smaller with a warm and detailed sound. I have a boostaroo revolution to drive the SR325i with the iPhone, which makes a big difference.
I'd echo Skylab's statements - the Shures sound pretty darn good out of my Sansa Fuze. There's definitely improvement with amplification (most notably a slight increase in bass impact and control), but it certainly doesn't sound anywhere close to bad straight out of an mp3 player.
I still haven't had the chance to compare these to sr325i's or AD2000s, but I can attest to the sound being almost the complete opposite of a Grado sound. They are more defined across the audio spectrum with a laid-back presentation, at least when compared to a grado. It's more of a detail hunk, a real studio headphone with proper imaging but not nearly as engaging or musical as sr325i's for example. I simply can't enjoy jazz with these phones. They sound pretty good with tracks that have complex percussive structures; Try "Broken Rhythms" from Trilok Gurtu for instance. I like the fact that each instrument has a place but I still think they are not musical or coherent at all. They absolutely kill a saxophone and make it flat-sounding and uninvolving, despite it being from a good recording.(Not sure about frequency graphing) A saxophone solo is about notes/pitches, no?
I can see why people like these and I like them too, but only in a limited manner :/
They kind of remind me of why I hate the HD6xx line so much..
Well, my conclusion so far. 40 hrs behind and burning..
electropop,
To see where youre coming from, what other cans do you consider musical besides the grados and which ones do you think are not musical.
I'm getting excited to get these because of skylabs comments but then again skylab also likes beyers which I dont care for at all so I might have to say sorry about my wallet and try them myself
skylab,
Are you thinking of doing a full review of these within two weeks? Even if we dont exactly love the same headphones, I'm pretty sure the details of your review will make me know whether I will like them or not

I don't plan a formal review, like I did with the HD800 - too time consuming. But after full break in, so about Monday, I will make a detailed commentary. I;m just not going to do hours of level-matched comparisons like I normally do in reviews. Still too exhausted from the whole HD800 odyssey
Still it will help a lot, thanks in advance. As per your personal taste for now, not thinking of technical issues, do you prefer them to hd800s or is that just too much of a leap hehehe
that would be very interesting since the esw9s are a little more expensive. hd25s were also your top pick in your closed cans review before, those would also be nice if casually added in the mix of cans for comparison.

No can do on that - I sold the HD25's quite some time ago, when I bought the PXC350.

What - you can't do a detailed comparison with 'phones you haven't listened to in months? What happened to the ol' auditory memory, ay? Yeesh! And I thought you were good.
