2nd..... The DVOM is the best tool when diagnosing automotive ECM's, PCM's and such. These devices are way more delicate than a coil of wire in a headphone speaker. The minimal voltage will not short the wire or cause it to come loose from the mylar. I do recommend a good DVOM though.....

Alright guys, a new option in pads has opened up for me (and possibly everybody else if it all works out) with the completion of my DIY'd hot wire foam cutter (~$20 :D). I'm going to start my attempts at a DIY pair of bowls here soon (and hopefully get some Grado bowls to compare). If it works and I get some experience with the thing, it may end up being the simple fix to avoid the $50 jumbos.

Would be nice to get bowls that cover the entire ear instead of painfully resting on the ear..

And thanks bob I couldn't find silver cables so I settled with canare 4E5C. Read somewhere their good headphone cables. I've also got some 4s6 that I could make single ended but probably not balanced since the cable is too thick for the plug

My wife may kill me, but at least I'll die with a smile on my face.  In the meantime, I'm very pleased that the dremel has resolved the issue with the slip-on grooves.  I had to stop what I was doing until I'd fixed that issue.  Now, I'm ready to move forward.  It rained last night and today but the skies are clear again - and I'm ready to sail!

I was under the impression all the wood Grado's used some form of Mahogany due to the fact it is readily avalible and easy to work with. That is what I would assume the HF driver housings are.

Only idea as of now for help is different types of foam. Right now I have some really dense stuff, seems quite a bit stiffer than a lot of things. It may work for a jumbo since it would sit more around the ear than on it though. We'll see, I've actually got some work ahead of me trying to get the wire to stay straight, it's at a slight angle right now and everything is coming out slightly off vertical.

sml1226--make crazy shaped ones, get the essential areas right and then get creative, angles, dents, curvy indentations.....could be my meds kicking in but standard foam pads are just foam pads....can you color them somehow??

It's mahogany.  That's the only wood Grado has ever used.  They outsource the wooden shells to some other outfit.  Regardless of what you see on the outer/secondary/rear shells, the inner shells are identical on the HF1, RS1, RS2, HF2, GS1000 and PS1000.  It's all a simple, mahogany inner.
