I miss the sparkle a bit (it's still more lively than say, my SE530s) but I was becoming irritated with the lack of bass.  I listen to hip-hop, rock, etc so I needed a bit of thump.  Well worth the trade-off IMO.  Still sparkles but with some slam.  One of my students has the beats and this hits harder while retaining a lot of HF.

If I did upgrade, it would probably be to the 325i, but for now I'm quite pleased with modded SR-60s.  I might have to try the dynamat mod to see what that does.

This is why I avoid essentially irreversible driver mods...I lovey grado sparkle up high on my 225i's...

Your ordered the Saple, right?  I have a new pair sitting on my desk.  I live in VA - and, assuming you live on the west coast, correct?  How about I send you the Sapele cups that I have via Priority Mail so you have something to work with this coming weekend?  When yours arrive, just mail them to me?   Does that work for you?

Half an hour between both posts and we have a result

What kind of improvements did you experience?

On another note, I still have the cloth thingy in the front of the drivers. What kins of sonic changes can I exactly expect to hear as this is an irreversible mod?
What I'd like to get is more top end extension and clarity that I find a bit missing. I have to EQ to kind of ammeliorate the thing...

That's what we refer to as "loin cloth" around these parts.  I have headphones both with and without that cloth present.  I, personnally, couldn't  hear a difference.  Then again, maybe the cloth was just blocking frequencies that I couldn't hear anyways.  However, seeing that bare driver with the cloth removed does kind of scare me - as there might be situations for some people (if they have kids around, etc.) might not want to remove that cloth.

As far as doing the mod, I personally would say "no" to it.  No benefit.  However, let's let the others chime in with their experiences, too.

You've opened up a big portion of foam that was blocking the sound moving from the drivers to your ears.  This makes quite a significant impact on sound for most people.  Now, for those who think their Grados sound too bright, moving over to the comfy pads and leaving them in-tact will usually tone down the brightness a bit.

To perform this mod, I usually use a socket.  Hold it down on the foam hard and then carefully, with a craft knife, make your cut-out.  It will be a neat, professional looking cut.  Also, with the socket method, you can make the hole size a bit larger than a quarter, if you desire.  This will expose more of the driver, if you want.

I personally don't think I would remove the grill cloth. I have a dog and have had problems in the past with hair (mine and my dog's) sticking through pads and touching the mylar. This would be a lot easier now that I use open pads and even more so with no cloth. It just doesn't seem worth it to me. I really doubt the sonic differences could be that evident too.

Now, for Xaval and other interested wood-lovers (pun inteded) here is some eye-candy of sorts - or a home made teaser for myself. This is the final design i came up with for the HF2's that Martin is making for me - he starts the work today :)

Hey guys, quick question here. Im not sure if any of you guys have experienced similar issues but when I tried to mount the cups I got from Marty on my original plastic gimbals, one of the forks was too stretched out/wide/loose so that the cup cannot securely sit in it. I figured that I might have abused my gimbals too much in the past but oh well... So any suggestion on how to bend the arms on the fork inward a bit more? I'm thinking about heating it up with a heat gun to soften the plastic while holding it tight inward, then let it cool down and maintaining the hold...

Plastic is annoying to work with, a word of caution. It shrivels up when heated/melted, so take note before taking the heat gun to that thing.

Isn't that more GS-1000 rather than HF2? considering the wooden uppershell/mushroom-top

Yes, the shape of it is more or less a copy of the GS1000i since i love the look of those but the drivers come from a HF2 that he got a hold of cheap enough for me to afford. Since the custom build itself and the wood and so on costed around 450$ and he got the HF2 for 350$ which make it 900. And that is exactly what I had :)
Otherwise it would have been sr325i drivers which i didn't really feel was worth that much money...But now im happy. Cant wait to get them xD

The easiest way is to contact Grado Labs.  Look up the phone number on their Web site and give them a call.  Tell them you're having some issues with your gimbals staying in place.  They'll send you out a new pair.

Good luck to you!
