I've got something to note, the magnet plate of the grados keeps changing. I've owned three different pairs of grados, two sr80is and one sr60is. The first sr80i was ~3 years old, and it had a steel colored magnet cage and had a large GRADO 32 printed over the entire back. This is in contrast to the ~6-8 month old pair of sr60i, which has a blue backing and smaller letters. The newest pair I have was purchased in january has a solid black magnet cover with no grado 32 markings.

first sr60i, 3 years old. Covered in dynamat from a headphone dissection. You can see the GRADO 32 if you click on the image. Also, the cage is larger and more domed than newer models.

Second Pair. sr60i. blue tint to the cage.

I no longer own a camera, but my third pair in my hands is solid black, but has the same overall shape as the above

So my leathersmith got back to me after 2 weeks with a custom full grain leather head band in cognac.

I think he did a fantastic job. Unfortunately, this means I have all the parts to complete my Grado, EXCEPT.... you know..

I've noticed this as well..

My 325is drivers have the Grado 32 on one driver and the other one has nothing on it (makes me nervous that they are different)

Edit: 1,000th post! and it only took me nearly 8yrs...yay me!

I've seen some SR-325i drivers with the black backing on the magnet.  However, my other SR-325i, my SR-225, my MS-1i - all had silver backing with "Grado 32" on them.  I wonder if the black backing on the magnet designated something better?

Not long ago we had a theory running that all drivers in the Grado lineup were the same. Now they maybe different under the same models. Who will dispell the myth?

Hmm ... since Grado is located in Brooklyn, I sort of see a Sopranos type of situation here.  The mafia starts reading this headphone forum and starts getting all kinds of ideas on the killer mods that can be performed on the Grados ... and, the potential for Grado to have varying driver levels of quality out there.  Eventually, a group (similar to the Sopranos) makes a hit on the truck delivering the next batch of drivers to Grado and floods the market with them - eBay and everywhere else you can imagine.  OK ... time to wake up from that day-dream.
