No, you got banned for repeatedly resorting to personal attacks when you didn't get your way in arguments, same as Gregorio. Just look at the content of the past few pages of this thread as a good example. God forbid anyone actually take responsibility for their actions instead of just blaming "the admins" for some made-up belief about their attitudes. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
I just want to point out bigshot was banned around the same time he called out this questionable tweak that was sold by one of headfi's sponsor. An other example that comes to my mind is nwavguy. He also coincidentally got banned right around when he pointed out some troubling problems of the asgard headphone amplifier. Schiit audio also sponsored headfi (at least at the time). Maybe I'm trying too hard to read between the lines.

It seems like sponsors insulting forum members have happened before but they did not get banned for that. Maybe the reason that is treated differently is that they were not making a hobby out of it? Although this member posted some other gems as well.

Maybe personal attacks are allowed as long as it's only done sometimes, but then what about @LisaShayBrown? Half of this guy's history is dedicated to attacking head-fi members while posting nothing of substance to go with it. I think it's an impressive amount for a 4 month old account, give it some time and he might rack up as many attacks as bigshot.

None of the head-fi staff "have to" justify their mod decisions so why do you feel the need to jump in here? Your clarification does not even make sense as there are many forum members who make personal attacks without getting banned. I'm sure I could dig up more examples, I just happen to have a recency bias and I also find baldr's post at least funny which is why I still remember it.

I don't see any reason to dredge up ancient history. There are plenty of current topics that deserve addressing in this forum and I'm here to participate in that discussion.

I try to move the discussion forward despite difficulties from obvious trolls. As it relates to me, I can handle them personally without intervention of admins. And it's clear the admins have other things to do and aren't interested in policing our discussions. It might be messy when a troll forces it to a head like that unicorn guy did recently (twice). But it passes over after a week or two and we get back to business as soon as the troll gives up and moves on... at least until the next troll arrives!

All of the regulars here are the catalysts that keep Sound Science, and in turn Head-Fi, vital and relevant. I keep seeing our posts turn up in Google searches. We are bringing new people to the forum and we're providing fact-based, solid information. That's a good thing. Too many of the regulars have gotten frustrated in the past and have fallen away from the group. That isn't a good thing. The intent of the pub thread is to provide a place for the regulars to socialize and get along away from the trenches. I don't like seeing arguments and old grudges dragged in here because this isn't the place for that.

We should try to keep our regular members and build on our knowledge base. Sound Science is an important resource. It would be a lot easier if people who don't like what our little forum is about would just stay away from it and let us do our thing. I think we all know that the reaction to thread crapping (and reaction to forum crapping) isn't the problem. It's just a reaction to the problem. Sound Science is a little thing unto itself. The trolls need to learn to respect that. Continuing to provide fact-based, solid information is the way to overcome that.

I try not to mention the name of that company any more.

I may be contentious, and I may argue my points forcefully without backing down, but I don't insult or attack people until they've crossed that line themselves several times. I'm happy to reciprocate respect, and I'm happy to admit I'm wrong if someone presents convincing factual evidence to prove their point. I've done that in the past. I've also forgiven people who insulted me repeatedly when they reel it in and stop misbehaving.

I'm not unpopular with certain types of people because I'm rude. I'm unpopular because I make strong arguments and they can't keep up. Continuing to repeat subjective impressions based on sloppy comparisons and perfection fallacies doesn't constitute proof. That's a sign that the person should just hang it up and move on. In chess, when someone realizes they're beat, they resign the game. No one is required to ride their mistakes all the way to the end. In fact, they should learn from their opponent. I've also done that in past myself.

I enjoy debate, but I'm pretty tired of trolling, rudeness and refusal to argue on point. But I'm not here in the pub thread to engage in debate. I'm here to hang out with friends.

Maybe to keep it that way we need a sort of unofficial agreement or recognition that anyone disagreeing with anything said or intimated in a “friendly forum” who wants to reply or debate an issue at length should look for a thread dealing with the subject in question, as well as not bringing debates here from another active thread instead of facilitating its propagation here …
Any thoughts ?

Yup, you're reading too much between the lines. Nwavguy was spamming the forums with links to his blog, even after being told new members couldn't do that, so he said "I'm going to consult my lawyer" or words to that effect, which, due to the extreme costs involved, means an instant ban. I told him at the time that he was welcome to post all his content on Head-Fi.

It seems like sponsors insulting forum members have happened before but they did not get banned for that. Maybe the reason that is treated differently is that they were not making a hobby out of it? Although this member posted some other gems as well.
That post was an insult? Really?

Were the posts reported? Doesn't Sound Science still have a dedicated moderator? Why don't you ask them? @castleofargh

Were the posts reported? If so, were they deleted? Making repeated personal attacks will get you banned, mostly short-term at first, as far as I know (I've not been moderating years, but I've discussed it with moderators).

I think the biggest problem with the Sound Science forum is the lack of actual scientific work here. It was, honestly, created for people who wanted to complain about audio products they think are BS. It would have been far more valuable if it had been created strictly for actual, scientific content, with contributions by people in the industry in one way or another.

In case people don't recognize it, we have taken two shots across the bow. The next shot may be aimed at someone's Head-Fi account.
