Sadly I can't test and confirm or refute your position which sounds well reasoned and thought out. Now memory is far from perfect, but I do recall finding the Fostex sounding more expansive, but as I said, I can't test this impression so I'll leave it at that. Perhaps there are some who have the two headphones still and are able to share their thoughts? Not a big deal really, as long as people enjoy their gear that is all that counts.
Now when strictly talking about memory. I do notice a one huge thing. My Z7 improved soundstage with upgraded cables, but then it still was a notch behind the MDR-SA5000 (strictly stock forms) on both. Then I modded SA5000 and the soundstage of SA5000 was much more expansive, and immersive. Together with the details and realistic tonal body, I thought that the Z7 was left behind much much too far behind to be in any comparisons, simply the Z7 was beat in every departments and aspects (bass, trebles, details, tonal body, soundstage...etc.). I left my Z7 untouched for a long while. It was simply "inferior" was the word.
Until, I decided to replace the drivers cables on the Z7. It became a game changer and can now be a comparison to the modded SA5000. The soundstage now is noticeably much more expansive and immersive compare to the SA5000, better bass, sub bass, mid bass, rumbles....and the speed of the bass is neither too fast as SA5000 nor too slow as the stock Z7 was. I think it fit right on the edge of detailed bass with "sub-woofer" feeling. Now it is up to preferences and mood to decide which one I should listen to.
The one sure thing is that Z7 is much better to watch movies with due to the soundstage and field + that bass. I do mean there are sound coming from the back of my head literally , where as before it was just a faint hint of it.
I have not heard of th900 but for being similar driver sizes and bio cell to SA5000, I don't doubt the Stock Z7 was lacking behind in soundstage.
