They were Def harsh lol and warm yes. Dark I don't remember it's been so long but probably to an extent because I modded a pair with hifi man leathers and velours and what darkness there was went away and reminded me of a less refined, rougher hd598

I had D5000 (unmodded) and it was definitely harsh on high, with bassy on bottom. All Denon D series was typical U shaped closed headphones. Too bad Fostex 'enhanced' this signature rather than try to balance it with their TH lines.

Oh yikes, you guys need to hear a fully modded DXK Series Headphone, My D2K with Cocobolo was well DARK! I loved listening to it with metal an EDM but yea it was dark, Sub Bass was really stellah, mids where nice and the Highs were very Poliete

Still though it was dark! xD maybe Frank can back me up lol

graphs show them having neutral highs but I think @Mshenay is right. Its prob because they weren't refined and a bit abrasive. Anyhow I hope the z7 isn't overly dark. Looks like I will be waiting a few weeks according to bill p.

I will hold on as long as I can. I am craving a second go at the he6 so I hope I can hold out. I also hope the seattle meet isnt so soon that I dont get to bring them.

I also hope they can respond to eq. I want a graphic equalizer in my chain so I can use it with spotify and soundcloud as well. Anybody know a good one that doesnt require balanced inputs?

ehhh I think Frank, mentioned he liked the MDR Z7 over the D7k... did Frank mention that the MDR Z7 Was brighter?

But yea, the "refined" DXK series headphones are something to hear, some much so I've sold one an I'm on the verge of getting another. I could get a MDR Z7 but... instead a modded D5k is on my Radar!

Any ways, hoping Frank will send keep his impressions a coming!

I have and love the SRH1540/Sig Pros. If I get these I can do some interesting comparisons.

Are these headphones better than the top Ulrasone closed cans? The ED8, SigDJ, Pro 900, SigPro?

I'll second the other comments:

The SigDJ/SigPro (Ultrasone Edition 9 without the fancy metal) has a congested presentation and some harshness which the Z7 doesn't. It sounded to me like a more polite Denon D5000.
The ED8s were YMMV depending on the pair you got. Mine sounded awful, even if the deeper pads fixed the congestion of the ED9s, the Z7s are far better in that regard with their angled drivers.

And then the Z7 exhibits the same "spike" in the same 8-10KHz region that I don't think I'll appreciate, so... I think I'll wait a bit for more impressions to come in.

You wont notice it so much IMO. It is further down in the range that the spikes become noticeable. Though you could be listening to music that is annoying that high up that I don't.

  Hahaha
Well, just like Oregonian, I also found the LCD-XCs underwhelming... they were just missing "something"... (my notes on it should be somewhere out there... ;)) and they were heavy as... well, quite heavy! ;)

The closed cups result in a 200 Hz mid-bass suck-out that you either think sounds better or worse. I really need to do my video on them and talk about this. They are really the ultimate Audio Technica that AT doesn't make.

Just kinda random Z7 thoughts:

I think my former stock(ish) TH600s went deeper into the sub-bass, but lack the bass clarity of the Z7.

I think the treble extended slightly higher with those TH600s, though again lacking said clarity. (This one I'm less confident on)

Listening to the Z7s have really emphasized just how massively "V" shaped the TH600s really are. (I mean huge)

Is it possible for a headphone to have slightly "wet" mids, while having slightly "dry" treble and bass?

The HD650's mids might be just ever so slightly "wetter" then the mids of the Z7, but not temping enough to make me switch for my lady crushes

I have my Lawton modded TH600s (LA600s ?) sitting and waiting to be listened to, I just want to live with the Z7s a while longer.  I feel I'm still exploring the Z7s.
