Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

It's more that I don't care to get into the over-analytical descriptors that to me have no value. Zero. I consider this a hobby and don't have the need to overthink things. To each their own. You want to analyze like that, great.

I did not say this was better than the TH900. Read it again. I said I agree with Jude that it could compete and then said it had better mids. Still feel that way.

But competing means it beats the th900.

Everyone knows that!

As long as the songs sound good, who cares? Glad his thread is progressing again.

 1. slightly south of neutral highs if not dead neutral(barely dark if at all)
 2. north of nuetral bass, even though some still call it underwhelming(prob because its not a super dynamic headphone)
 3. decent-good clarity
 4. big soundstage for a closed back but not exceptionally wide
 5. forward mids
 6. only decent dynamics/attack
 7. notes are not heavy and aggressive
 8. more dry than wet( this means less reverberation and fast decay instead of lingering notes) This also applies to the bass which is read as fast yet airy and kinda snappy with ok texture and some distortion
 9. excellent imaging
 10. somewhat source/amp dependent?
 11. somewhat scalable?
 12. possible midbass bleed into what reads as a forward midrange that is unoffensive and does well with female vocals
 13. exceptional build and comfort that will be a headphone example of how to do it right
 14. not a flagship and priced accordingly

At this point peoples comments are only for clarity because a lot has been covered. We know what the picture is but we just need the lens to finish focusing.

it will be until @DoctaCosmos whines again.

Did you order them yet Docta?  A little discernment goes a long way. Get to know peoples preferences a bit, read in context(I mess up there a lot too), and try to summarize what people are saying.

still I'm giving this bad boi till the Spring before I grab it. Though @DoctaCosmos were hoping you buy it an try it! Just know man you could turn that bad boi around REAL quick here on head fi [for very close to your purchase price if not a few dollars less] so I'd get it for your self and see how it sounds! If you HATE it, you'll get like 97% of ur cash back in a week or so,

Why can't I wait that long? I need to regain my self control. I can't keep anything for a long time any more, or wait for it either.

I've owned the Pro900, Signature Pro and Edition 8, and spent a week with the Signature DJ. Liked them all and the Ed8 was my favorite of the bunch. I feel the Z7 is a better overall phone than them all.

WOW. I'm going to have to start saving up, and replacing my closed back gear then. Even though it's not in the same class, I still want to ask: How do these compare to the HE-6? Are these even better than a well driven HE-6?! :O Should I sell those as well?

If the MA900 is any indication, then you should be fine
smily_headphones1.gif

That said, I think the 560 has a marvelous treble and certainly does much better than most neutral HPs do

Well... I agree.

The HE-560 sounds slightly "off" to me in the upper midrange and lower treble region... but it's still bearable.

If I could fix that with a mod, then it would be absolute perfection for me. I'm happy with the rest of the sound.

Z7 is overall less bright than MA900, but it does have a slight peak in the sibilance area. Z7 is more similar to 1R than MA900.
Overall the Z7's FR is tilted downwards and the presentation is soft. Slower paced and relaxed is a good way to think about it.

That dip around 1-2KHz somehow makes me feel like these will sound a bit... hollowed out, or "see-through" when it comes to vocals?

(trying to avoid "transparent" because I don't think "transparency" is about recessed frequency response)

  +1

I think you'll be happy with this headphone then.  So far the Z7 isn't crazy aggressive to me...

Well, I have high hopes for when it comes in next week.

My comment to oregonian was merely pointing out that there are ways to discern headphones in an objective manner so when you say they're better to people that recognize these principles you should be able to back it up. For all I know he might think the mids of the hd598 are better because they are more forward than the th900. Is that belittling someone or is that simply pointing out that a concern of mine.

We have to insist though that opinions are expressed in a civil fashion, free of insults. Use common sense. As yourself often if what you're about to post would be good if everyone were to do as you are....
....., people make between 2000 and 4000 posts per day and millions of people read the site every month. That means the most important person when it comes to keeping the discussion pleasant is YOU.
