I haven't had much time to listen yet, but I always feel the 3.5mm output of the Walkmans lack when driving something like the Z5, also I have probably less than 100 hours burn-in. It was about 5 years ago that I was happily using the Z5, but after owning the Z1R for a couple of years now my ears have been spoilt so it's going to take some time to readjust to the warmer signature, with what seems to be more mid-bass emphasis. When I have time I'll experiment with tips. I'm happy for now to have achieved a really solid, comfortable fit, and to have an old classic to use to help extend the life of my Z1R.

At times, but it is just the signature that took a bit of time to adjust to again having the Z1R for a couple of years. Perhaps silver would tighten the bass but I don't want to spend more money experimenting with cables. I'll try some different tips when I get some time.

Yes the Z5 sounds dirtier than the Z1R, its like z1r clears uo the dirty bass region. But by anymeans is z5 inferior, avtually pretty good stage rivaling z1r as well setails retrieval across spectrum.
IMO the Z5 like a source that is neutral or a broght source and of course this source muat have thw muscles to lift the Z5 to their highest
It's less of an all rounder for sure, I do think it's still better than Sennheiser's recent releases like IE200 and 300, haven't heard the 600 nor 900 tho.

I owned the IE300 but it didn't sound right to me with a lot of my music. I demoed the IE600 and ended up buying them, but after getting home I found the small design to cause fit/sound issues. They sounded very good but I wanted a bigger driver bass - I think in the back of my mind I always wanted the Z5 again. I actually find them to be pleasing with all my music. I like the idea of a single dynamic driver and would like to hear the IE900 one day.
The XBA-Z4 using balanced output with my Z1 (DMP) sounds very refined has almost reached the heights of the IER-Z1R wow increisble detail and not longer mussied nass, very deep and controlled like woth z1r increidible staging woth more deprh

Are you using the double 3.5mm stock balanced cable ? I got the XBA-Z5 this week and looking for a 4.4mm cable. I only wanted the headphone but this guy gave me everything for $200... The Z5, Sony PHA-3 amp, upgraded cable and a bunch of other things.... which would've cost like $2000 back in 2014. Problem is the balanced cable is only compatible with the Sony amp, and I really don't need another amp right now.
The spiritual successor to it is the EP-TC50 (stock tips included with the XBA-N3 and the WF-1000XM3) and then the successor EP-NI1000 (stock tip in the WF-1000XM4).
And do be aware that the current "hybrid tips" as they are called, are NOT hybrid, just silicone. (EP-EX10/11)
