Sony's New 2014 flagship IEM - XBA Z5

Have the 2A and a ZX300. Both work great with my Z5 and Kimber combo. Honestly, if the ZX300 was available at the same time. It would have done the job as for just a $100 more, you get a great DAP with 4.4 balance out which can be used as a DAC when connected to a PC.
Thanks Wiz33 - the ZX300 is darn near perfect for me but I prefer a bit more power for overheads. Do you notice any difference between the two with your Z5?

I use both at low gain and I usually have the 2A knob at the 1 o'clock position (dial goes from 7 to 5 clockwise) and I usually have my ZX300 at 70-80 out of 120 so there should be plenty of headroom left on both but the 2A does have more power on spec but I really don't think there's much of a difference.

You are using through the balanced cable?

Out of all the nice in-ear designs they borrowed/stole from the not so great XBA design and even called it XBA

Is anyone using the Fiio Q5 w/AM3B? The AM3B is described a warm so was wondering it pairs with the Z5

I've been on the lookout for the ideal IEM to complement my CA Andromeda with stronger bass and a relatively more fun sound for rock and metal music. I'll primarily use them with my WM1A (balanced or SE) and iPhone (with dongle).

So far I've managed to track down 3 candidates in my area second hand:

Oriolus Mk2
Sony XBA-Z5
Noble K10UA (not sure if this has my aimed sound judging from the reviews, never had a chance to hear them)

I'm gravitating towards the Z5. What do you guys think?

I noticed that one of my filter screens had gotten pushed down a few millimeters down the tube. I got a dental pick to retrieve it and realized that it’s not a filter screen at all. It’s a piece of foam that runs the whole length of the tube! I’ve never seen this before. It’s connected to the bottom somehow, so you can’t just slide it out. Wondering if anyone here has modified that portion because mine are a bit dirty and I was wondering what would happen if I just snipped off a millimeter of it.

It's there for exactly what you see, to prevent dust and dirt from getting into the unit housing. Some people have removed theirs but I would just pull the front out a bit and clean it then push it back in.

Some people removed that? I wonder what the result was? It’s such a large piece of foam that must have a very important part in tuning this iem. But yet, I have never seen such a large foam piece in the nozzle of an iem.
