Sony Z1R....listening impressions only

I noticed that the Z1R is (slightly) discounted in all Sony shops in Asia I recently visited (Sin, Th and Ph). Seems like phasing out to me.
🤔
Might be due to:
- It's an "old" product
- Softening of the yen

These might give the impetus for Sony to offer discounts to increase sales.

Even though the Z1R isn't a hard headphone to drive I have noticed that the more power you give them the better controlled the bass is. The mids and highs don't change too much but the bass sounds much tighter and more balanced with amps that have a good amount of power like my Jot II. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just in my head?

Agreed, they can be driven LOUD by almost anything, but sound INCREDIBLE the better they are driven, literally the sky is the limit

I just received my Sony Z1R.

It is the second pair I own, the first one I had at the beginning of my audiophile journey, with the serial number of 30sh at that time. Being new to headphones, I compared it rather obsessively with my other headphones which I owned back then, the Focal Utopia and HD800S. I did not cherish the Z1R enough at that time, it seemed recessed and quirky and somewhat off to me. By now, I understand that I was chasing some sort of self imposed reference target. Not fun, but reference. In that regard, Utopia and HD800S fared then much better.

Well, this is not the sound signature I am seeking anymore. What I value now is physical impact, dynamic presentation and interesting localization of instruments in a 3d space. My favorite and remaining headphones - Abyss 1266TC and Meze Elite - are quite colored. The Z1R fits perfectly in that segment, dynamic and hard hitting, but also tuned in a unique and rather relaxed way, being the perfect closed back to hang out. Can’t believe it took me so long to finally understand its merit.

I bought my MDR Z1R in 2017 April.
This coincided with a review done by a dude in a Hawaiian shirt who, IMO, did the Z1R such an injustice it spoiled my initial enjoyment.
I now love them.
The Z1Rs are still flourishing but we never hear from him.

I bet 99% wouldn't even know about a 'spike' if he never said it!
I totally ignored him and made my own decision based solely on my own ears.
Still not hearing this spike I've seen mentioned.. The one time where ignorance is bliss. Because, I love my MDR-Z1R.. This headphone is sooo righteous for pure musical enjoyment. The Forever Champ of Closed Back Headphones and a legend in my mind.

Here's to the Sony MDR-Z1R!!

could you show us a picture later :) - i am very interested
My new Geekria case has arrived and this is the configuration. Have flipped the case around and the BHA1000 stays in the slot. Slot will accommodate the BA1000 with a VanNuys sleeve.

Seems what I recalled about my previous Geekria case was inaccurate.

Don't like how the pads are bring squished at the bottom. Will likely cut the underlying foam a bit so the cups aren't open that wide.

Looks great. I've been contemplating on buying the same case for quite some time now.

I wouldn't hesitate. This is my second one of the same model. I'd sold off the first case when I sold my first Z1R a year ago.

I also use Geekria on other headphones. More for the sake of matching similar aesthetics.

I got this model off Aliexpress which was quite a bit cheaper than from Amazon.

Took less than 5 min. Pads are just barely touching now.
