Sony Z1R....listening impressions only
Oct 26, 2021 at 11:39 AM Post #7,606 of 9,690
Any fellow Sony Kimber cable users — could you let me know if the below marks/circle indentations are normal to see on the plug only after a couple weeks or use?
I am not noticing any adverse affects but was just wondering if the wear on the connector looks fine and is normal.
Photo below for reference.

A side question, are those premium cables worth the money?

I haven’t even tried the stock, so cannot compare or give you impressions— but I did get the Sony Kimber right away as it seemed like a no-brainer pairing based on lots of info in this thread as it’s a pure copper cable made for the MDR Z1R.

Cable itself is not the softest/a bit stiff, but seems of decent quality and sounds great.

Just have that question about the connector…

It really depends on who you ask. The feelings about cables sounding different and/or making a headphone better sounding are mixed. I'm in the camp the believes they do and I have a Kimber Kable Axios for my Z1R's.

Mine doesn't have them. Are you inserting them at an angle into your amp/dap?

Thanks for responding.

No, not at all… inserting the normal way and none of my other cables have this issue.

I do notice the L plug rotates when inserted into DAP sometimes, so maybe those “circle” marks are due to that as the gold plating is more sensitive/soft in this cable? Interesting…

Could anyone else who has the Sony Kimber chime in? Maybe I have one from a bad batch.

My plug rotates as well when i plug into my TA, ZX507 and Hip DAC occasionally, but it doesn't have those rings like yours.

I purchased mine secondhand over a year ago so I know it has had a lot of use but shows no significant signs of wear.
Where did you purchase from? There are apparently fake cables that are hard to spot as they are assumed to be made from authentic cable off cuts but joined under the splitter.

The second link is for the iem cable but possibly the same for the MDR cable too?

Thank you for alerting me to this… I don’t think mine was fake as I purchased the cable from Amazon Japan, fulfilled by Amazon.

Perhaps it was a bad batch… but given how it “aged” only two weeks in, I don’t want to risk it and am currently printing out a return label.

Must just be a bad batch as it definitely shouldn't have done this, I glad you can return it.
Better be safe and get the Kimber Axios $$$

Haha! That’s the way in this hobby, can never go a step down now… I was thinking about picking up a used Axios, if one comes up at a good price… or perhaps going for an Arctic Cables Signum (pure silver) cable. Have been reading that apparently silver pairs really well with the MDR-Z1R.
