I have read that some are complaining about harsh treble in the MDR-Z1R. Could be they were using insufficient powerful amps? I can't see a trace of harshness out of the Burson Soloist 3XP. These were sounding OK with the Fiio M11 Pro DAP in balanced mode but with the headphone amp they reach another level.

It does sound bit harsh with the original cable on my thx amp, TA is bit better but still there. With sony Kimber the harsh is basically gone. My silver Norne cable will arrive tomorrow, wait and see how that will goes:)

I am using the stock 4.4mm terminated cable and it sounds sweet. My 4.4mm to XLR adaptor arrives tomorrow, can't wait to listen balanced!

First listen, Oh my goodness...........20210315_171703_HDR.jpg
Is that unbalanced output actually driving them correctly? I usually use them on High Gain balanced. . . . . .

The treble on my MDR-Z1R sounds a little brighter with the Chord Hugo 2 than it does with the Schiit Mjolnir 2; I very much prefer the presentation of the highs on the latter. I'm not a big fan of strident, bright highs, so a little more control in the upper frequencies is always a positive in my book.

you have to try balanced, TA doesn't have enough power on SE to drive the Z1R with the stock cable the difference is night day.
I wouldnt use the stock cable, period. I am using my LG V60 using UAPP with a Gothic Audio all silver USB C- micro into the Walkman input. Volume set to 50% in the app, it would destroy my hearing above -20db on the TA. Norne Audio silver Draug hp cable, which when i purchased, the first thing o initially noticed was i had to lower the volume compared to stock.
I have emailed Trevor @Norne about an adapter but im not sure if that's possible on a single end cable with a 1/4" jack?

No that is not possible with an adapter, you would have to get the cable reterminated
