Sony WF-1000X discussion thread: Truly wireless IEM with Active Noise Cancelling!
Jul 12, 2019 at 11:41 PM Post #407 of 502
ANC on the 1000X made practically no audible difference so it had better be a lot better ! On the other hand the WH1000XM2 offered excellent ANC so if the WFxm3 are possibly better that's a game changer for TWEs ! Have you been able to do some more tests ?

I’ve used it in the Tokyo Metro and JR lines as well as walking in the street. It’s NC is very, very effective. The automatic ambient sound control is however as wonky as ever

Rock solid signal with my iPhone XS in pocket while walking through Tokyo.

The “pass through” audio feature works well too, maybe takes a beat longer to activate than the one on the WH series.

It seems there's a lot to look forward to, it's amazing Sony kept the WF1000mk1 with their ridiculous ANC around for so long when they had something so much better in store !
How are you finding the battery life ? They claim 6 hours with ANC which is probably more than anyone needs. One thing that was annoying with the MK1 too was the permanent drain in the case, I hope they've fixed that.

Well, so far I have yet to exhaust the batteries, using them for a couple of hours at a time. Interesting question about the case drain, I had that with the WF1000X’s and it was an annoyance to be sure. No evidence of that so far, but it’s early days yet.

I picked up an additional set in black last night, I like to keep a set at the office and another at home, which is how I used the WF1000X’s in the past. I got the first set at Yodobashi in Shinjuku and the second set at a LABI near Tokyo station. The LABI had a lot of stock, maybe because it’s a less popular place for this kind of thing than Yodobashi.

I will experiment with flying with these in a week when I go back to the USA. I have a feeling they won’t be as good as the WH1000XM2 that I normally use for flying because they don’t have the pressure compensation routine, but we’ll see.

Got my WF-1000XM3 today... Was pleasantly surprised by the sound.
I think it might just beat all the portable wireless solutions that I have, in terms of overall sound, fit, usability, features and battery life.

The case looks big. How does the sound compare to the Senn MTW? Considering the switch, as I'm not too much a fan of the design. The bass on the MTW is also a bit much, however, I like the soundstage.

If you like Sony's house sound, you would much prefer the WF-1000MX3. The bass is a tad lighter on the Sony. Sound stage feels wider on the Sony, further amplified by the V/U shape sound.
On my ears, the Sony fit better, although the Senn felt more secure. Battery life is pretty obvious from the specs. ANC is a big big feature, you can hear the immediate difference especially on the streets. At the same volume, the Sony's are louder. Big plus. The app... Senn's app is pathetic, let's just put it that way.

Now that I have both, I kind of regretted getting the Senn, especially when it cost me a lot more. Guess I will be giving it away to my other half. That would make her happy.

Awesome, thanks for the comparison. I'm even more tempted now to make the switch! I agree that Senn's app is lacking, particularly that EQ which is trash to me. The bass is also simply overdone, almost bloated. Not too much of a fan of V-shape (I like strong mids), but I'll take it over bloated bass.

Would get these but the Galaxy Buds have spoiled me in terms of comfort when charging. Wireless charging is a huge plus. No more cables, no more hassles, just remove the pod from your pocket, dump it on the nearest pad (I have some at home/work) and that's it. It's as if they are always magically charged.

Surprised Sony missed that opportunity. A waste given how decent the rest of the product is. Will wait for next gen, I guess. Still a good achievement and it trounces more expensive wireless offerings from what I read.
I'm curious about the ANC capacity given the size, especially compared to a bigger benchmark like the 1000XM3, but am not curious enough to buy a pair just to check that out. Might wait for a borrow.

Keeping the Galaxy Buds tho, those were quite a positive surprise sound-wise and wireless charging is a huge plus. ANC is not provided tho, that's a gap that might be filled.

Hows the ANC performance? I'm curious how it stands against the full-sized XM3's ANC performance.

This guy does a test, but it's weak. If he did a test under high airplane engine noise environment, it would be respectable. Also, he says over the ear cans have better noise isolation than iems? I always thought iems did? I can't share his enthusiasm for the full-size XM3's bass quality.

Hopefully, another reviewer I know does a better ANC performance test video as he does really good ones.

One thing I wish the WF-XM3 had is wired connection if used for inflight entertainment.

That's a pretty good comparison given the circumstances (done quickly in a shop). I'm not too impressed with the results though, the WM is way superior to the WF in terms of ANC and there's a lot less hiss but then it depends how he recorded the actual sound of the WF. As for cans blocking more noise than IEMs, well it depends on many factors...noise-blocking IEMs like the Etymotic ER4 are going to be painful to wear for many people with their triple-flange tips and isolating cans like the Sony WM are going to be too heavy on the top of the head for others.

Definitely that combo sounds best. But when on the move, it is cumbersome, and lack the features you would want in a wireless setup.
Great when doing chores in and around the house though. Connectivity and range is excellent plus it has LDAC. As a standalone receiver, it is better than the AT & AK.

How about something like BTR3 or ES100 with a short MMCX?

Does the BT neckband affect much to the sound compare to wire?

All these might just force me to sell my collection and get Sony WF. The sound seems to be good enough

I don't usually use the Z1R as an wireless option. That won't be doing it justice. Only for specific situations, when I am too lazy to lug the WM1Z around the house.

I don't know about the BTR3 or ES100.

Yes, the WF sound is more than good enough for causal listening. Because it has that signature Sony sound, it's relatively easy to EQ, making it sound like the Z1R. A very "unpolished" version of it, of course.

The one big negative, are the connection dropouts. No matter the distance, they happen rather frequent (my guesstimate... once every 15-20 mins???). Definitely more than the competition for sure. I hope Sony can have this resolved through FW.
