Sony Walkman Thread: 2022 Successors to the WM1A & WM1Z
Hi all, what is the overall consensus on the NW-WM1ZM2, compared to the latest competition now?
I am flying to Japan on October 18 to buy one. I would not buy it, if i wasn't sure its the bestHi all, what is the overall consensus on the NW-WM1ZM2, compared to the latest competition now?
Good luck

Please elaborate...Consensus in the audiophile world? Now you are unreasonable
I have just been on to technical support and they are adamant that high gain is on the UK version and have linked me the instructions.
Will Roon work on the unit?

Capped WM1A/Z also have high gain but it doesn't matter as volume cap is still there. Reviews on amazon.co.uk of wm1am2 give an answer that european version is unusable same as wm1a was. Fortunately there was a way to disable the cap on wm1a and there is no way wm1am2 because it's on android. Hopefully someone will find a way but I will not hold my breath because it's not possible to disable level cap on any of previous walkmans based on android.

Its not. I bought from Sony UK then returned and got a Japanese one from Amazon.co.jpI have just been on to technical support and they are adamant that high gain is on the UK version and have linked me the instructions.

Its not just loosing high gain, the volume is also lowered by around 20-25 steps.
As already said way back, easy to drive SE846 needed near 90/120 on UK one while on Japanese one 65/120 and only 45/120 if using high gain (balanced).
My recent import of Sony IER-M9 IEMs even on Japanese one needs 90-100/120 in low gain, so the UK/EU one would hardly drive at all to reasonable volume!
The volume limiter comment is totally different to the volume capping and no Hi-gain.

Automatic Volume Limiter is an additional feature that can be turned on or off but volume capping is set on a system level. With AVLS off volume still will be very low.

This seems crazy, if this is an EU regulation, why is it not the same with all the other manufacturers. I don't understand why thy would do it if they know it is effecting sales. Its not. I bought from Sony UK then returned and got a Japanese one from Amazon.co.jp

Neither do rest of us, other than Sony a big target to prosecute unlike Chinese makers. This seems crazy, if this is an EU regulation, why is it not the same with all the other manufacturers. I don't understand why thy would do it if they know it is effecting sales.
Its been this way for all Android Sony DAP's going back to ZX1. I've imported last 3 Sony DAPs now due to stupid cap and from ZX2 onwards, never been any workaround.
The none Android Sony's with volume capping could be flashed to another region to remove cap, but not possible with Android versions.

It will always be a divisive topic cos of the price differential with the 1AM2. I'd give it a listen if you are able to. Many variable factors, including your IEMs. It was the same debate with respect to the OG 1Z/1A. So, it is important to see what makes sense for you.Hi all, what is the overall consensus on the NW-WM1ZM2, compared to the latest competition now?
