It was designed to take the 3.5mm ground and allocate it also to the 4.4mm, to make the 4.4mm have a ground also. The 4.4mm was made to not contain a ground as Sony feared it would add noise.

So why have it then? On other thread someone said makes no difference for headphones/IEM's, just for feeding out ?

It can be useful with 4.4 mm when used as a line out to other equipment where ground loops can occur. No benefit for headphones/IEMs. That's it.
