Sony Walkman custom firmware (non-Android)

Hey, maybe you would've liked the "Bright" sound signature of the Walkman One firmware, as it's derived/evolved from the DMP-WM1 series of previous firmware versions :)

It's entirely up to you, of course, I understand if you don't want to experiment.

I have the A45, A55, and WM1A, and I installed a ton of custom firmware and stock revert packages during testing, and they're working perfectly fine. I don't exactly see how the issue you're describing could be caused by firmware, to be honest.

When you use a stock revert package, the firmware will be 100% the stock one. There is no stuff like some part of the custom firmware still being left on the player. It's basically like when you format an USB stick and you put something else on it.

Someone sent me an additional Sony A45 player for free, which has a weird issue - the screen would be off, but it would randomly turn on from time to time, like I'm pressing the Power button, except I'm not. I plan on opening it up when I get some time, in order to take a closer look at the Power button, or even to put the board from the problematic A45 into the chassis of the other A45 I own (which works fine) - or maybe I could just disconnect the buttons side from the board, and see if the player is still acting up.

Unfortunately, I don't see how this could help. At it's core, the custom firmware is just the official firmware with some non-kernel modifications. In an operating system, the kernel basically sits/facilitates interactions between the software and the hardware. I didn't rebuild the kernel for the custom firmware or something (it's not really possible anyway, as the source code is missing some Mediatek proprietary code), so any hardware parameter is as Sony configured them.
Thanks for the reply! Do you think running the battery to zero might help in any way?

Thanks for the hint. That sounds interesting. I will give it a try in the next days. I don't mind to experiment if time allows. 😀

Hi Guys,

so after listening with Midnight v2 for a few month, now I returned to the DMP-WM1 FE on my WM1A. Region is set to U, headphones are Sony MDR1AM2 .

I think, this is the firmware version I love most... Bass with U region is so incredible deep... just great . Once again thanks a lot Mr. Walkman 😀

been on the DMP-WM1 FE on my WM1A for some time now and i am very happy with it , switched from classic to plus as apparently (if i remember correctly?) the plus setting is a more full sound

will try the wm one at some point , have downloaded/stored all the previous CFW by @MrWalkman , lovely job so kudos to you one more time , sir :xf_cool:

Hello everyone, so I've been using Mr. Walkman's firmwares since I got my player in June of 2020 and now I am running into what appears to be a software issue that won't go away no matter how many times I restart or re-install officially licensed firmware. I'm not sure if anyone here has run into this issue but for several weeks now, my WM1A goes into random spastic cycles playing random songs, volume going up and down, database reloading and rarely the player will restart itself. The most common occurrence out of all of these is the player will begin playing a song that was paused all by itself and/or change the song to a random song on the player regardless if "randomize" is being used. The last custom firmware I was using was WM1A+ 2.0.

I've tried everything I know to "reset" the player to factory condition; from turning it off and back on, to restarting by holding down the power button, to backing up my music from the internal storage and reseting the player to factory condition. I of course reinstalled official firmware 3.02 to rule out any custom firmware being on there that could cause the problem. None of these attempts fixed it at all. Since I am considerably past the manufacturers warranty, I was really hoping, would anyone here possibly have any solutions that I may try to fix my player? I appreciate any and all responses!
Try using a different memory card and live with it for a while to check

Hmmm... my nightmare... sorry to hear that. Have you tried to revert to Sony stock firmware (3.02)??? Ah..yes you already did... I don't think it is a firmware issue...All the best and please keep us in loop.
It may just be some firmware that you installed wrong. But I mean I have made every mistake in the book as far as doing it wrong and there is always a way back home. If worse comes to worse you can probably take it to a Sony service center and they can bring it back to stock? So you have totally reset the player both soft reset and a factory reset? I mean you could try and deplete the battery to zero with attempting to restart it a bunch of times, but really that should not help. What I would do is 1st keep trying to put different MrWalkman firmwares in or try to take them out. Also try turning off the player and rebooting it while attempting to put MrWalkman firmware in. I have basically done it all as far as making mistakes and much of the time just turning the player off and on works? I have put almost every revision of the firmware in both players....both the 1A and 1Z.

Can you attempt to put Sony firmware 2.0 in? Someone must have a copy of old 2.0 around which you could try? Often Sony makes it hard to find anything other than the latest firmware.

To tell you the truth it sounds like a database card issue? You should take out your card for the time being, and concentrate on internal memory.

A stuck button could cause strange unpredictable behavior. Make sure it is not in a case, nothing pressing on buttons. Is there a screen protector? These can affect the touch interface.
Further troubleshooting, simplify down to the most basic configuration to reduce the possible factors.
- remove all non essentials, like microSD card.
- download fresh copies of the stock FW. Download from another PC. Make sure you don't have a corrupt copy of FW.
- Reload stock FW multiple times. This should have no theoretical effect, but there are observations that this restored the original SQ. You are in a state where grasping at straws is allowed.
- try another cable
- try a Format System Storage (backup first)
- Use only the internal memory. Copy a few new songs onto the internal memory, and observe. Get it back to as basic a configuration as possible, and see if the problem is still present.

So some things to try.

Edit: Older Stock FW locations.

WM1A going for a super low price of around USD650 in Malaysia now. The lowest price I’ve ever seen and this is from the premium Sony dealer in Malaysia. Clearing stocks perhaps?

I've got a virtually new NW-WM1A that has roughly 20 hours of playback put through it. I'm using a pair of Denon AH-D9200

I got a pair of balanced cables (Meze Audio 99 Series Silver) and on High Gain, the sound is better than the single end. Perhaps more detailed, more full.

But what still bothers me is percussive instruments such as cymbals, triangles, snare drums, or even high guitar and violin notes and female vocals sound waaaaay far in the back. They lack shimmer and clarity and sound distant. This was a problem before the balanced cables and is still a problem now. I've played around with the EQ quite a bit and can's seem to get the right sound.

Would the MrWalkman mods help in this regard?

To answer your question, without a doubt, yes! Install Walkman one and there’ll be no turning back after that. You can easily uninstall it if you don’t like it. Go with the WM1Z sound signature first.

What were you using before getting the 1A? The Walkmans are generally described as more analogue sounding compared to some daps that are more analytical and have a brighter presentation. I don't know the Meze, perhaps it's just their signature and not a good one for the higher frequencies but from what I've read the D9200 should have a decent treble presentation.
The only thing I could think is that the previous owner had tried the firmwares and the revert to stock firmware process hadn't been done correctly resulting in the stock sound being off - @MrWalkman is this a possibility?
You could just try to install the stock Sony 3.02 again to see if it helps.

I can't say for sure that there is something wrong or not on his player without having it myself and giving it a listen first. I can only recommend what you recommended, installing the 3.02 stock firmware.
