SONY NW-ZX2

That's great as it puts tremendous pressure on all other dap manufacturers. Consumer wins!!! iRiver should be sweating bricks

The consumer never wins when Sony is involved.  Memory Stick anyone, Betamax, ATRAC....Sony refused to add expandable memory for years, so once they finally offer DAPs with expandable memory, you think you are getting a deal paying a grand for something others do for half the cost.

To all those that have mentioned JVC, thank you!

I honestly never gave them much thought, as I usually only see their super-low end stuff, packaged near the checkout line of retail shops. I had no idea the FX 7xx, 8xx and 11xx lines existed.

The 850 looks a little more beefy than the 750. I'm happily reading up on both right now. Thanks again.

Yeah, don't blame yourself too hard...the Fx series is only Japan market :D

He didn't really mean those Fiio and Ibasso
biggrin.gif
, or Porno either

Well, when you start to take battery life in account, they all lose.

I totally agree hence my fave DAPs are my Sony A15 and ZX-1 and even my ancient iPod Classics. Anything below 10 hours I won't consider even if it's the greatest SQ in the world.

dont think matters.but have you tried with flac or dsd files?

Flac yes, but no DSD. DSD is overkill for me. I don't like that hi res files lose EQ ability. I have already converted many of my hi res files from 96 to 44 so I can use clear bass on them. They sound a lot better that way and don't lose any audible quality. Hi res is useless to me. One album sized around 1.35 gigs is hilarious and any SQ advantage is totally inaudible. I also had my hearing tested very thoroughly by an ENT this week and have no problems.

What is really funny is that I have some Hi-Rez albums that actually sound better on Spotify streaming at 320 OGG.

Ooops 96 should be downconverted to 48 and 88.2 to 44.1 if you do 96--> 44.1 rounding errors will  occur

Battery tests: with extreme vbr MP3 (lame v.0) I have been averaging 2-3% drop per hour. That is with checking the screen once per hour. this is all I use now for files as I cannot hear any difference between them and flac that were three times the size.

Updating an sd card on the zx2 is a huge drain on battery. After putting in my 128 with fresh files, it took at least 15 minutes to update and dropped around 10%.

Tried streaming bluetooth over my stereo and it sounds good. Drain is not bad: 4% per hour.

Battery drops 1% every 3-7 hours when left on standby. Expect to lose 5-8% every 24 hrs of non use.

my A10 scanned the card in 5 minutes... wow 15 minutes half time of fiio x3

+1

My top priorities for a DAP are
No. 1 SQ and flac capability (don't care about HD or DSD stuff)
No.2 Battery performance
No.3 capacity and expandability
No. 4 UX (GUI) and looks
No.5 extra gimmicks

Bought a WD mycloud 4 tb drive. I wanted to stream access my entire collection to the Zx2 without turning on the PC. I got it working and moved my music to the WD. I installed the mobile Android app for WDmycloud to my Zx2. I can see all my music files, but it will not play FLAC! It runs through them like 1,2,3,4,5...quickly as it can't read and tries the next one, and just keeps repeating. I tried an mp3 file and that works. I called WD support but they didn't have a clue about this.

I wonder if the 4.2.2 version of Android on the ZX2 has something to do with this issue. I have the latest firmware and updates installed on the mobile version. This is really the only reason I bought the WDmycloud; to stream. Luckily I don't really need to stream FLAC as all my files are already converted to Lame vbr,  but it's a heads up in case anyone else is looking to try this.

I also tried the DNLA option on the Zx2 itself and it sees the WD drive but shows 'no content'.
