IMO it's to risky to jailbreak a US$3k device...
I prefer to just enjoy music and improvements of the new firmware

I just know growing up the general rule of thumb was if you wanted to jailbreak or root anything you don't update firmware. I had given up on that game a while ago but from other threads it seems like the CFW on the original M1 was very beneficial so trying to get root/CFW might be worth it. I don't think rooting this device would cause any issues from a functionality standpoint based on other devices i've done so on but there's always a first.

InterestIng. In Mr Walkman’s custom firmware, there was no such requirement.

Enjoying the 1ZM2 with the MDR. The Sony Kimber Kable came today. And took it out for a spin with the MDR. And later with the DMP as well.

I thought that the old M1 was linux based so no need for root access which is generally a requirement in Adroid to be able to make changes, like CFW, possible.

Yes the first gen is Linux based

Perhaps that is why Mr Walkman did not touch any of the android based Sony players. Though the custom firmware he came up with are great.
