For starters he don’t have one of the Android players and as far as I know has no intention of getting one. Nobody has yet come up with a way to root the 2 jubilee players in 2-3 years so I would say it is fairly unlikely that a root for the M2 players will become available
I own Fiio and Sony DAPs and the Fiios have much better battery life out of the box partly because they seem to bend the rules by not having all android services enabled. My Sony ZX507 seemed to have everything installed, enabled and syncing data all the time. Once I turned off syncing Google services and disabled everything not related to audio the battery life became pretty good.

My new Hiby is as bare an Android 8.1 as you can get which makes it run great even on old CPUs and 2GB RAM. Think Sony was rigt to go Android 11 in expensivw DAPs Need some life in them..
Is it still possible to buy the overhead MDR-Z1R in the UK? Don't mind used or new but I can't seem to find it anywhere. There's one on eBay but it's probably going to end up being around £1500 with duty/VAT/customs etc.

I just done the adb uninstall of the various google bloatware for my ZX507, it makes my ZX507 perform more responsive compared to just disabling apps. You can give it a try if you wish to get even better performance.
The WM1AM2 with bloatware uninstalled still feels faster than ZX507 with bloatware uninstalled. I think it has to do with Android 11 being more graphically optimized over Android 9.
If I was to look to the WM1A/Z M2 it would be the CN version without the Google bloat/data acquisition SW. Sadly the system is broken, being far more focused on serving the provider than the customer. Sony sold out to Google's $ if I wanted such a solution I'd just purchase a competent dongle... IMHO Sony should have continued to develop it's own Walkman OS inclusive of streaming, not just fall inline with the rest of the flock...
TBH I'd far rather send a WM1A/Z to NPaudio and have it modified to my spec. If I wanted a multimedia device a $3K DAP would be the very last option as my smartphone/tablet does a far better job and with a dongle can put out very decent SQ...
ZX507 Debloated(wifi, bluetooth, nfc off) doesn't even drop 1% after 4hours of Idle standby. Other ZX507 users have previously reported that their ZX507 uses about 1% of battery per 1 hour of Idle standby. I am going to let the ZX507 on standby for longer to see whats' the actual standby achievable.

Many people know the battery indicator isn't a terribly reliable measurement, especially at "100%" (the battery may be at ~90% to 100% of its actual maximum capacity and still display as 100% full), if you really want to give a more accurate picture of the battery consumption at standby, I would suggest to measure the variance of battery level when it is not "full", say 60% or so.
I tried campfire holocene (among 1 of the lowest impedance) with 4.4mm, with 1am2, very very slight hiss but very acceptable to me.
Cause I came from ifi gryphon which hiss like mad (waterfall sound) on 4.4mm. The hiss on Sony 4.4mm is like the hiss on ifi gryphon 3.5mm or slightly less. Sony just sound so musical and really push the performance of my Holocene to the max.
Sold off my gryphon that very night after i tried Sony.
I reckon we'll only start getting proper original vs M2 reviews in the coming weeks and months. I'd also like to see some reviews of Nayparm-modded M1 vs stock M2 players. For now, just keep measuring the EMI noise from your SD cards...
