Sony MDR-MV1

While one needs be realistic with what you expect in low frequency capability from an open back headphone, if it is true based on a reviewer comparison that the HD600 has more low frequency power than this, I would certainly have to take a pass. I absolutely do not expect a bass cannon (nor truly want one) from an open back headphone, but lean and lack of weight in the low frequencies is never a good thing for me. I do prefer a bass response that is tastefully elevated such that there is still articulation and nuance, but also some tactile impact, and those characteristics are quite achievable.

I am not at all against equalizing; however, you need to have some technical data about the distortion characteristics because as often happens, a bass light headphone will demonstrate significant distortion in the low frequencies when boosted. That doesn't always mean the distortion becomes audibly destructive, but it can. I will certainly look for more information before blindly jumping in on this one. I have owned several Sony headphones including one of the first Z1R to arrive in Canada and at home now I have a Z7MKII as well as a portable XM3 so I do tend to enjoy the Sony house sound, but I remain cautious here.

It seems that the headphone was specifically designed to work with the new 360VME service. I wonder how well it will work as a studio headphone without that program, or indeed as a music listening headphones. Will it need that program to work well/sound good?

‘Along with the launch of 360VME service, Sony will release the "MDR-MV1" open-back monitor headphones for creators that can maximize the performance of 360VME.’

A Japanese reviewer shared his thoughts as per below:

Lows, mids and highs all get a 4.8 as he mentions that the sound is incredibly balanced. Slam gets a 4.7 with comfort getting a 4.8. However, what amazes is that he gave resolution a full 5/5.

In his summary written on screen, he mentions that this headphone's resolution is top of class for its price range. It is lightweight and doesn't wear the user out after hours of listening. Additionally, its low impedance makes it easy to drive. Throughout the video, he had driven it using the 3.5mm out of an NW-WM1AM2.

Now my interest has really been piqued.

Haha, with both the HD660S2 and the NDH-30, and DT1990 Pro I'm set on dynamic open backs for a while. I still have the MDR-Z7M2 and the MDR-1AM2 for some Sony goodness :)

What are the differences between HD660S2, NHD-30, DT1990 Pro (Amiron)?
Which are AKG K712, K812 nearer?

I only have K612 from that generation of AKG, it has a unrivaled large soundstage, but all the other cans sounds more natural(IMO). I would say the NDH-30 is the closest in soundstage, it's not huge but it's a nice focused and resolving one. DT1990 has the best "slam" but needs treble taken down. HD660S2 is a nice compromise with great comfort and no fatigue, but I think overall the NDH-30 is the best sounding since it's also a bit warmer/darker in the midrange which I think sounds more natural. For those longer sessions HD660S2 wins because it's lighter.

NDH-30 really is surprisingly resolving, the least blurred reverbs, pans and effects I have heard

NHD-30 or HD660S2 who has the wider soundstage similar to the AKGs?

NDH-30 is the most similar, but it is clearly smaller than the AKG soundstage, general SQ is much better though.

I agree. Neither NDH30 nor 660S2 have a particularly wide stage. They're adequate, but not expansive. The NDH30 has a bit of an advantage in resolving ability. Both are fantastic, though. I haven't listened to much else since I got this duo.
