When I was dealing with the defective pair, I had to call to setup a repair. Sony’s authorized repair center for the entire United States said the Z1R are not reparable and are a “replace” item per Sony.
So, it’s true. Sony considers your $2000 IEMs disposable. It’s a travesty.
//EDIT: Even the IER-M9 sells for around 1050€, but they are not on sale (that is marked separately), this seems to be the price they sell for from now on...
But on the Sony Shop Japan, they still cost the MSRP (pretty much)
I also want to confirm how wonderful the Z1R sounds with the Azla Crystal tips. I never thought this iem would sound this good with a wide bore tip. In addition, they are really comfortable.

Got an early bonus and debating z1r or mest mkii. Listen mostly to heavy music, and Z5 was a favorite of mine. Anyone have both? I'm a bit of an audiophile bass head. Love clarity but I want it to hit hard, big sound stage. Previously had Clairvoyance. Sold it in part because I thought my Shure Aonic 50 sounded better at half the cost... kind of wondering if that will be the same hear. Also wondering about seal between Z1r and Mest. Definitely don't want to hear outside world, and wondering what's easier to drive. I have an m11, and going to pick up a hipdac 2 and ifi blu go.

MEST will be easier to drive, have a “fun” sound that you may or may not get tired of.
The Z1R on the other hand needs power to open up the sound. My experience has been that it handles all music that I throw at it, but in some cases the mids are a little pushed back.
One thing that helped me decide: is the MEST or the Z1R in the most top 10 lists?

The price drops have been around for a while now actually. I think Sony usually does this with most of their products once R&D costs have been “paid-back”. It doesn’t necessarily mean a new one is coming soon, but I am hopeful we’d see a new one sometime next year. Or at least on the TOTL Walkmans. The WM1 series updates has been long overdue.
As for the IER line, I just don’t think there’s gonna be anything coming out this year.
