SONY IER-Z1R

Due to Kimber making such a good cable for the MDR, it was a no-brainer getting the MMCX Kimber for the IER-Z1R. And.....I did everything right; I got used to the supplied 4.4mm and did burn in to the IEM, even waiting weeks before attempting to discern the reality of the Kimber IER-Z1R combination.

After the test I felt the included cable was slightly better, which is actually a fairly well agreed upon conclusion.

Now comes the scary part.

Not to go into it too much but I’m very strong at 5 foot 11 inches and 264.5 pounds. I lift weights almost every day.....but the R Kimber MMCX would not come apart from the IER. I was about 50% sure something was going to break, then again same on L side. Crazy!
Were you able to rotate the Kimber plug within the socket of the Z1R? If so then the very tight fit is due to the MMCX ring ferule gripping too tight.
If the plug cannot rotate then it is binding in the socket due to there being no clearance.

Did you eventually get the plugs out?

If any IER Z1R owner doesn't require the Sony 4.4 Balanced cable supplied in the box, then I would purchase at an agreed price.

Don’t remember any attempt at rotating, as I wasn’t focusing on that. But yes, both plugs eventually came out. Replaced the stock included MMCX and that’s how it will stay. Though the Kimber has made big improvements on other IEMs in my collection, so it wasn’t really a waste. Paid a great price due to some sale too?

Opened up my Z1R packaging box today and noticed the fairly low serial number. Curious to know what number are they up to these days. Has anyone bought a pair recently and are willing to share their serial number? With the amount of positive reviews the Z1R has, I would’ve thought these are selling pretty well for a niche Sony product. I bought mine in Feb 19.

Purchased mine a few weeks ago and have 6263 - they were bought directly from Sony - did you get yours from a dealer?

Nice! So roughly 5000 units in a year. Yeah I bought mine from a dealer. Sony Australia seemed to have some stock issues when they were first released.

If they actually sell 5000 units yearly that's pretty damn good numbers..

Serial number is a random non repeating number between 1 and 8000. :scream:

Oh I didn’t realise that. I thought it would be sequential based on production runs

Thinking can waste energy and lead you to lose a lot of money.

So after some listening with the IER Z1r, I definitely prefer them to the campfire solaris. With the Solaris's, I found the bass excellent quality, but always felt it was slightly lacking, which drew me to the sony's. They provide what I was feeling I needed more of. It just may be endgame for me :)
