If he can get his hands on another player, that might be worth a try too.

Smyth Research Realiser A16
You know I did...You have probably already tried this, but I suggest turning everything fully off.
Another owner in France uses the ub820 with his a16... No issues... But he's not home to help right now.

If he reverts to firmware 2.10 or 2.11, now Dolby Atmost from the player returns?

What is the disc that he's playing, that doesn't get Atmos presented by the A16? It absolutely contains a Dolby Atmos audio track, and it has been selected in the "Setup" (normally presented when you insert the disc, before "play movie")?
You said it started ever since installing firmware 2.12. What was being used before this upgrade? And there WAS Dolby Atmost from previous firmware? You say he's now tried going all the way back to 2.05, and still no Atmos. So when, if ever, did Atmos result from the player? What was the state of things just prior to installing 2.12?
And just to clarify, you say he DOES get Atmos via eARC from the TV. This is from using apps on the TV (e.g. Netflix) which shows the "Dolby Vision" badge when playing an Atmos movie (e.g. "The Two Popes" on Netflix). And with this very same A16 setup, but simply changing "audio source" back to whichever HDMI input feeds the player which is definitely delivering Atmos from a playing disc, that the A16 no longer shows Atmos?

Hi, I have a ub820 and I’ve expierenced that if I switch on the Panasonic player before a16, atmos won’t work. It defaults to normal Dolby 7.1. I have to restart the player and then all is hunky dory. Seems like it’s a handshake thing that’s a bit sensitive…

Can confirm this, I have the same player.
If you have such issues, a Dr. HDMI 4K would likely fix them. It would keep the same EDID active all the time.
Thank you for your advice, how s your ub820 connected to the A16 btw? Have you heard of the Media Integration Lab in Tokyo? Read at the following link:
https://blog.son-video.com/en/2022/05/media-integration-lab-the-best-focal-immersive-audio-system/
As the speaker configuration there is able to deliver sound over 42.3 channels, do you think that PRIR measurements with a Realiser A16 unit might be adapted for that lab?
