When I saw the low price of the A16 in comparison to the A8, I thought that the Smyths were simply following the commodity pricing model that computers, cell phones and other consumer products have been following for decades. I thought well the boards were cheaper, the assembly would be more modular, the firmware including interface was well understood, and the prices of licenses were all figured in to their pricing model. I thought they perhaps intended for the kickstarter units to be loss leaders which would establish the product and its performance capabilities on the market, and make the product something studios would find essential and audiophiles would lust over. In short, higher performance than the A8 at a lower price, just like computers and phones.I most likely don’t know details of how Smyth Research estimated their costs. However, if one looks again at the campaign at the kickstarter site, it follows that from the beginning they had in mind a low-cost Realiser, whose first-generation prototype was concluded sometime between 2014-2015. The second-generation prototype was presented at High End Munich in 2016.

Then, it seems that the unexpected occurred. Already at High End 2017 they said that the deliveries of Realiser A16 units as part of the kickstarter campaign were going to be delayed. In the end, the first deliveries began in July-August 2019 instead of May 2017.
Unfortunately, they miscalculated the problems involved and therefore the development time which led to major cash flow problems all of which were exacerbated by the Covid pandemic and the AKM fire.
Thankfully, there's still a pulse. And in the end they've delivered a truly remarkable product which truly has no real equal in the marketplace, and which now fulfills most of the original promises. Now if they can just get the supply chain working for them again...
