Smyth Research Realiser A16

I most likely don’t know details of how Smyth Research estimated their costs. However, if one looks again at the campaign at the kickstarter site, it follows that from the beginning they had in mind a low-cost Realiser, whose first-generation prototype was concluded sometime between 2014-2015. The second-generation prototype was presented at High End Munich in 2016.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1959366850/realiser-a16-real-3d-audio-headphone-processor

Then, it seems that the unexpected occurred. Already at High End 2017 they said that the deliveries of Realiser A16 units as part of the kickstarter campaign were going to be delayed. In the end, the first deliveries began in July-August 2019 instead of May 2017.
When I saw the low price of the A16 in comparison to the A8, I thought that the Smyths were simply following the commodity pricing model that computers, cell phones and other consumer products have been following for decades. I thought well the boards were cheaper, the assembly would be more modular, the firmware including interface was well understood, and the prices of licenses were all figured in to their pricing model. I thought they perhaps intended for the kickstarter units to be loss leaders which would establish the product and its performance capabilities on the market, and make the product something studios would find essential and audiophiles would lust over. In short, higher performance than the A8 at a lower price, just like computers and phones.

Unfortunately, they miscalculated the problems involved and therefore the development time which led to major cash flow problems all of which were exacerbated by the Covid pandemic and the AKM fire.

Thankfully, there's still a pulse. And in the end they've delivered a truly remarkable product which truly has no real equal in the marketplace, and which now fulfills most of the original promises. Now if they can just get the supply chain working for them again...

Unfortunately, the feature has been eliminated... Stephen said it didn't work correctly.
Hi, follow up question on this. Making a prir with any normal subwoofer it’s unlikely to have any information below say 20hz. If you run tactile transducers (as I know you do) and want to utilise infrasonic frequencies, what is your method? Utilise the direct bass for LFE? What is the consensus on this?

Page 145 of the new manual does a pretty good job of explaining things.

Unfortunately, there is no real scientific way to level match the volume/feel of the tactile transducer with the headphones. This is where I think the limitations of your headphones and your personal taste for LFE comes in.

I use an amplifier (Behringer NX1000D) with built in DSP... Mainly because no matter how low I set the LPF if the Realiser... I somehow still manage to have higher frequencies bleed through... So I set the crossover in the amplifier to my preferred cutoff... and voila! You should be able to do this with most SW amps.

As far as infrasonic frequencies, I would imagine they just get passed on to the tactile transducer/ subwoofer via the LFE channel. The film American Assassin is a great example. There's a scene towards the end of the film that takes place on the ocean.. there's one special effect where if you're only wearing headphones... The audio goes quiet. Even with my Abyss 1266 TCs (King of Bass)... No sound comes from the headphones. This is where having a tactile transducer or subwoofer really does help. It's awesome! :)

I can't recommend a tactile transducer enough... If it's immersion your after... Feeling the bass is hard to beat.

The Clark Synthesis TST429 Platinum Transducer. Lorr Kramer and @casinorob recommended it to me.

https://clarksynthesis.com/tst429-platinum-transducer/

https://www.parts-express.com/Clark...RecNU_JRKYtXJWTM2dxscUOdmSExb0ErMNbRiB3J_yu70

Unfortunately, the price just went up $200.

I was fortunate to pick two up on Facebook marketplace for half the retail price. One for me and one for a friend in India. 😂

I'm sure the less expensive models work as well... but I have no experience with them.

PS... I have tried the woojer vest, strap and subpac... But the mockery from my family was just too much... Head tracking is important to me... so the Teletubby comments live on. 😩

I use a subpac and I like it. I could probably make the Clark Synthesis work even better with my Ikea Poang listening chair since it's frame is so flexible it would carry the vibrations everywhere but it just seems to cumbersome and would require power tools to install, and need another box for an amp.

People take one look at the Subpac and assume it's for granpa's bad back, but that's ok.

The price for Auro 3D on the A16 has gone up.

La commercialisation de la licence "Auro-3D + Auromatic" a repris, pour ceux qui ont raté le lancement, à un tarif toutefois un peu supérieur. La forte chute de l'Euro n'aide pas en ce moment (même le A16 a augmenté...).

The "Auro-3D + Auromatic" license is now available again, for those who missed the launch, but at a slightly higher price. The strong fall of the Euro does not help at the moment (even the A16 has increased...).

In Europe: 539 EUR

I think something’s wrong there. 539 EUR is the amount to be paid for both Auro-3D and DTX:X licences under DIY. More money is required if one wants the upgrade to be carried out at av-in headquarters in Paris.
If you already have the DTS:X upgrade then the Auro 3D upgrade costs 269 euros.

There were users reluctant to upgrade to DTS:X. Then, after the availability of Auro-3D and the news spread that it was a worthwhile update (the mighty Auromatic), those who want the latest capabilities for their Realiser A16 unit have to consider both updates, first time DTS:X and then Auro-3D.
