Happen to be at the beach this week, and after all the fussing and feuding over IEMs, players, etc., hereabouts, it still shocks me how fantastic a 2GB Clip+ (16GB card added) and the Cyclone PR1 Pros sound enjoying the sun and surf. No amps, no $300 IEMs, no silly high end cables. The total "beach rig" was about 100 ($30 for the Clip+, $35 for the PR1 Pro - I got a good deal via ebay - and $35 for the card). Amazing sound. Amazing value.

X2. For me it's a $27 refurb 4GB Clip+ and a pair of CX281 which were $11.50! Just plain good regardless of the price. The price is damn good though.

It makes you wonder why all the fuss over gear, no?

Anyone else have a similar el cheapo favorite? I know this thread has been done before, but it's amazing how little you need SQ-wise to be happy.

Yep, I recently bought a 2GB Clip+ for a good price (about 25€) and a 8gig card, and use it almost daily. Because of the nice weather, I wear no jacket, and I do not want to have pockets full of stuff.
I put my Clip+ on my belt and there goes the music! However, I always carry a good pair of phones, my "worst" pair actually being the IE8. I would like to buy something cheaper with good SQ, so that I'm not afraid of losing something too expensive.

Okay, but IE8 is cheating! LOL. IEMs/phones must be under $40, max! We are talking simple (i.e. cheap) pleasures here. Wish you could hear the PR1 Pros, they are an amazing value in my view.

I used to have those Sony EX-082 that were not bad, but I gave them to a friend, so currently, I've no "cheap" iems.

Unlike me, who has 5-6 pair (MEE SX31, MEE M11+, PR1 Pro, assorted OEM ear buds, etc.). I still prefer my DBAs or Etys, but just saying. It doesn't take much scratch to get a very decent sounding rig.

You know..$100 total is still expensive for some :p

Although my cheapest rig is free kinda. I have a M9 which I got for free and my blackberry which I use when my clip+ runs out of battery accidentally. Other than that there's my clip+ with my PL30 or M9 which costs. The clip+ cost me $40 (which was a great local pickup deal for 8GB) and the PL30 cost me $18. So that's two rigs for either $58 or just $40 which are both pretty cheap.

Well then get off of here and enjoy yourself.. LOL (I'm just jealous, I won't be back until this weekend..)

The beach is my home away from home and I'm more relaxed there than anywhere and I could care less about what's in my ears when I'm there.. It's just music..

Sometimes, I think we get lost in all of this (Head-Fi, gear, upgraditis) and forget that all of this is meant for one thing..  The enjoyment of music.  It's not about how you get there, just that you get there. IMHO

Oh and my beach rig is either my 4GB Clip+ and the Xears TD100 or my ears and the natural sounds of the ocean after midnight

Now go catch a wave for me..

I started a thread like this about a year ago. My original ultra-budget rig was a refurbished 1gb clip ($13) and an open-box JVC HA-S150 'Flats' ($6), for a total of <$20.

Currently I'd have to say it's the same refurb clip with the PR1 Pro (discontinued) or Brainwavz M1/ViSang R02 ($40).

8GB Clip+ (free, both of mine were given to me)
16GB microsdhc card ( $32 shipped)
Koss KSC75 ($5.74 on clearance at Radio Shack a while back)
Rockbox (free)

So I can leave the house with outstanding sound and almost 23GB of tunes at a total cost of less than $40.
