Instead of braiding the cable, is there a way to buy a shorter cable for the M50s? Like about 1m (3ft)?
 
Or will using a different cable make the headphones sound worse?

nah, these are not high-def audiophile quality, even if the cable makes changes, which is a huge matter of discussion around here, a regular cable similar to the stock one wouldnt make a change. i recently recables my sony V6, the cable was about 2 m, i cut it off and solder a jack, now i use a regular 1 m cable as detachable, sounds the same. http://assets.head-fi.org/d/d1/d1b5f8d7_IMG_0287.JPG
 
I actually open the M50 to see if that could be done, and i believe it is. i might try it soon.

I have an interconnect, same line as this http://www.amazon.com/NuForce-Transient-Cable-performance-Stereo/dp/B003WRANN2
is very flexible and the plugs very thin. but metal. and the cable looks great. i dont have that one tho, i have the 6 inches one. that one is 1.5 m

and its ok, braided. but a little stiff. 1.2 m
 
and lastly this: http://www.amazon.com/iSimple-ISVE913-3-5mm-Mini-Male/dp/B0015G5URG very tough and thick. 1 m
