Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

Although it is 2021, still this SE846 is such a rare gem find! Just got my pair last week, coming from a full size headphone (Chord Hugo2 - Glenn EL3N tube amp - ZMF Verite Closed / LCD-X / HD650), this se846 still please me even just direct out from my phone (LG V30+). Just wow..

Yet to do any damper / cable change, currently on blue nozzle insert. I know it is not a fair comparison, but immediately I put up my Moondrop Blessing2 with ifi micro idsd black label for sale.

I was thinking of getting a Moondrop iem, probably Variations.
Which aspects of the Shures are preferable to your Moondrop experience?

The overall presentation and the tonal balance from Shure is really pleasing. The moondrop is very good, punch way above its price IMO, but the treble is a tad too shouty on blessing2 (perhaps the dusk version will be better).

The soundstage, separation and imaging from se846 is another tier compared to blessing2. On moondrop blessing2 it sounded a tad congested, and the vocal is definitely more forward.

But again the above are the impression for blessing2. I have not heard variation so I cant really tell.

I use UAPP and Neutron for playback on my phone and DAP. Unfortunately I never managed to use EQ well. Somehow when I play with the treble it messes up the rest of the frequency range in an unacceptable manner.
That means you're most likely creating clipping. If you put the 16 kHz slider up to, say, +12 dB, you should compensate by putting the preamp slider to -12 dB and then turn your volume up by about 12 dB. The result will be the same minus the clipping.

Seems something like that is happening. Thank you.
Though doing the blue filter mod and coupling them with a Chord Mojo somehow has done the trick with tonality.

I've seen a few posts in this thread referencing the Chord Mojo. I had been using an EarStudio ES100 and now a Qudelix 5K for both mobile and desktop use since they're tiny and have both Bluetooth and USB. Anyone here have either of those and a Chord Mojo? I'd love to hear a comparison and know how much difference it makes and where. I'd bet it's better and am somewhat considering buying one, but they're almost $700 here and I'm torn over whether it'd be even remotely worth the upgrade.

I'm pretty much settled on the SE846 for now. I love the uniquely lush mids Shure seems to do across their IEM lineup, the SE846's detail feels if anything more detailed than live, and I'm pretty happy with the tuning especially after trying some filter mods. What seals the deal though and makes me not want to look for IEMs that might sound better is how well all Shure IEMs fit me; I can wear them all day and almost forget they're there.

Can anyone compare the aonic 4 vs the 846? Frequency curves are near identical

Indeed the Aonic 4 seem unique in the Shure line of IEMs.
The first hybrid.
The FR graph though are not identical to the 846's.
Aonic 4's upper register looks a bit less recessed.
Also its sub-bass response should be lacking a bit in comparison.
I am myself really curious about how they sound.

At the end of 2020 I had the opportunity to test the Aonic4, including the Aonic5, via the German Hifi Forum. Also the SE846 - it was a great promotion from Shure! In terms of sound, I did NOT like all of the Shure. My Ultrasone IQ is almost 10 years old and sounds better - although this is only a two way hybrid.
Even the resolution of the Single BA in the IQ is better than in the Multi BA SE846.
The dynamic bass is just as fast as the SE846 but more musical. Although I'm also a fan of BA Bass. But the tight IQ bass is a mix of BA and DD. Some sell the IQ because of the problems with the eartips ... the simple solution is triple ear tips from Shure or Etymotic.

The Shure sound grew on me. It’s a very typical sound indeed. I see why people could love or not love it.

Yes and you can keep the whole setup simple, even just straightout from your phone they still sound fantastic, a perfect daily driver. Not to mention they are really comfortable to wear even long hours.
