Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

Mr Burns,

Not to turn this forum into a Porcupine Tree thread but as you mention you like the sound of "Blackest Eyes" and Rush may I suggest the song "Anesthetize" off Fear of a Blank Planet. When Steven Wilson heard that Alex Lifeson (of Rush for those who may not know) liked PT he asked him to play on the song and 4:05 into that song you will hear the distinctive wail of Alex's solo.

For those high resolution fans, I have the 24/48 version from Burning Shed the official seller of PT digital music.

Getty's voice is "unique". The 8s actually improve Neil Young's voice. But Getty through the White filters is ..."fatiguing" .

Thankfully the rest of the band to me through the 8s is sweet. (Love that little high hat in Lessons). At his worst you just FFWD through him. 2112 (to me )Including Getty is 8 worthy.

Just assembling my "Bliss Liner" Then I can float on a gentle summer breeze going wherever the music takes me. My Summer comfort accessory for me and the 8s. Even the Bliss Liner is not Getty proof. Still he is better than Lemy

What's the best price I can expect on these? Also, does Shure stuff usually get discounted more once it's out longer, or not until it gets discontinued/superceded?

If you work hard, you can get the SE846 for $750 by haggling with different Shure authorized dealers. At least I have gotten that price quote, others around $800. ProAudioStar will over between 750-800 if you go in asking for 700; try their online chat. Shure closely watches what their authorized dealers publicize; I find that you can get a SE535 for $350-375, but will hardly ever get lower, and definitely not from an advertised price. So by going straight to dealers, you can get a better deal, especially some of the smaller ones.

Nice tip.  I just got them for $775 with free shipping.  Sure beats the group buy site, and I'll have them by Monday.  Plus, it's directly through an authorized retailer, so I most definitely have the warranty.

Interesting about "Burn In" many say the earphone will sound better after 50 hours of burn in or others say it will sound better after 100 hours of burn in. Is that the same as saying your exotic sports car will run better after 50,000 miles of burn in?

I think burn in is more subjective, and it is really a matter of your brain getting used to what your ears are telling it, more so than any physical change in the equipment. At least, that is what I have always found.

That's not a very good analogy. Burn in with dynamic drivers: 100 %yes. BA's: maybe, the 846's were my first pair of ba's which I bought new. Right out of the box they sounded great and I did notice an improvement with more time, however that might just be my brain.

Did I say "burn in"  is not happening? Just many say 100 or 200 hours then it starts sounding correct. So thats 200 working hours of moving parts to sound correct. If I put that theory onto a car and say that sports car wont go fast until 50,000 miles not only will I be driving a slow sports car but the value is going down each of those 50,000 slow moving miles.

Bad analogy. Cars require 'run-in' or 'break'in' to bed the internal parts together (example: piston rings, brake pads). This promotes sealing and smooth running, etc. BUT this is something that happens early like the first 1,000 miles.....not ever by 50,000.

It appears that Shure finally cleared up their act with the SE846, but at what price tag! The ones before these have had insane treble recession and early cut off bass. I wonder though, how these measure up to JH16s

This impressions thread is 261 pages long. I am sure if you use the "Search This Thread" button, you will find what you are looking for. IIRC, there may also be a JH16 or Roxannes vs 846 thread somewhere on Headfi. I also wouldn't be surprised to see comparisons to the JH 16 in the professional reviews of the 846.
