Shure SE846 Impressions Thread

Hello,
Is it crazy comparing the Se846 to the Hd800? I have now $1000 and want to have a new hi-end headphones. I cannot bear the weight from my LCD-2 anymore (though I love their sound).
I had many sub-$500 iem such as the Sony Ex1000, the Fischer DBA-02,, but nothing sounded like the LCD-2 in term of quality.
Thank you so much!

No, not crazy, per se... but I don't think you will find a whole of similarity to their sound. If you want to have 846, but in a headphone, the HD800 is definitely not it. The 800 doesn't sound much like the LCD-2, either.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. I don't particularly prefer a headphone's sound signature. What I love about the LCD-2's sound is the naturalness. Just to be life-like, not reproducing. I think it is $1000-tier worthy, i don't know.

Have you thought of looking into a JHAudio product? I have a pair of Angies which have a good bottom end, and a signature that loosely reminds me of my LCD-X. No doubt different from the LCD-2, but another possible choice?

Thanks, I ll try it though time, money and risk dealing with custom IEM is high for me who lives outside the US. JH makes the best custom IEM according to what I know but I can find plenty of used HD800s and SE846s easily.

I have the HD800, and did a comparison between the SE846

The SE846 is a lot weightier for certain types of music due to the bass extension. However the HD800 cannot be beaten for scale and openness. It depends on how much you want to listen indoors vs outdoors. I'd say that having the HD800 will give you more bang for your buck if all you do is listen in the house. However I have paired mine with the Schiit Audio Valhalla 2, and the Chord Qutest.

Thank you. May I ask which one you can wear for a longer period of time? In wearing comfort and sound. Thanks

I have universal Angies. Can't be bothered going custom. Still might be worth a listen, sometime.

No, you can compare them: SE846 is garbage compared to HD800. They should cost no more than $300 based on the sound quality. If you want to save the trouble of buying and reselling the SE846, just get some used Campfire Andromedas. They are so good that I sold my HD800S and MDR-Z1R once I got them.

I have the SE-846, HD-800S and LCD-3. I have also owned the HD-800 in the past. I suspect you will find the HD-800 a bit anaemic in the bass, especially coming from the SE-846 and LCD-2. I would recommend the HD-800S though. It's just as comfortable and a lot weightier in the lower frequencies, even if it isn't the cleanest low end.

What $300 headphones have you listened to that sounds like the SE846, I would love to know.

It doesn't take much to find a number of people who own / have owned the Andro, yet still find a lot of time for the good old SE-846.

I own both Hd800s and se846.
The se846 are great as an iem, but they will not scale as you buy better amps and stuff (I find).
A big set of cans can give a much richer listening experience.
The iem is a compromise to fit the environment/ use case.
I’d recommend Hd800 for home listening.

Sennheiser ie80 for $220. Sounds the slightest bit muddier but the bass has just as much extension and impact.

Is there something about the SE-846 in particular that inspires such vitriol?
