OK kewl... since the HD540 is from 1985, now I know it's predecessor.
After trying out some of the 60's and 70's sennheisers and not liking them, I was never interested in even trying out the higher end stuff and much less interested in the historical chronology of them.
Others swear by them, so if I ever see one for peanuts I'll pick it up and have a go.
Are they on your 'list' because you've heard them, or you just curious?

Anyone know anything about these? http://m.imgur.com/bwd7pSl,OvKBpUV
Wondering if they're any good or not. On Craigslist it says the company is Sound Design

Couldn't find the original post, but here's a quote:

Interesting! These look alot like my Soundesign SD-349, which like yours are very reminiscent of the Sennheiser HD-424, yet different in various ways:

Dunno about you, but I'd try em out if they're not too pricey.

  NAD RP18 - 2x Mylar version, 1x Kaplon version

How do you tell if its Kapton or Mylar?

Other than sound: you have to open them up and look at the diaphragm. Clear is mylar, orange/amber is kapton.

Kaptons are darker sounding in stock form.

I'm more curious what pads those are. Im assuming some open AT, correct?

Hi fellow vintage HP nuts, I recently sent a few phones off to Tyll to be measured. Here are some photos of the DUTs:

What you see are the Fostex T50, Aurex/Toshiba HR-V9 back electret, and Yamaha YH-5M. Also measured was a pair of HD414's, plenty of photos for that one on the interwebs.

The HR-V9 is a favourite, very even and extended response, fast transients, but its background is not as black as I'd like, perhaps because of the construction of its housing. I shall post some photos of its innards later on.

I've also scanned a copy of a YH-5M brochure I have which I've uploaded here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/49755/yh-5m_brochure.zip.

Hope you enjoyed!

The Aurex look sweet, the T50's have my attention.

Are these hard to come by, Yaluen?
