Shanling UP5 - Our new flagship portable Bluetooth DAC/AMP

As best I understand the worst thing you can do for a modern battery powered device is put it away for a while with a low battery such that it eventually drains to absolute zero charge.

It was fully charged when I stopped using it around August-September. Stored at room temperature throughout. So theoretically, shouldn't be any worse off (should actually be better off) than some device sitting in a box waiting to be bought by a consumer.

Since I may have a reason to use it again soon, I charged it overnight beforehand. I didn't try turning it on before charging. It actually would have been plugged in for about ~30h or maybe even a bit longer. Standard charger too, not high power.

It looks like I can get it to turn on briefly while it's plugged into USB for charging, but then it shuts off either immediately, or if I'm lucky after 30s or so. If I unplug the USB connection it turns off immediately. When it's on, it shows all the bars lit up on the battery indicator, except the last bar which is blinking.

Maybe it finished charging and stopped drawing power, but something else causes it to discharge after that so that it gets bricked if you leave it plugged in for too long? Weird how the readout is showing something close to a full charge though.

Agreed, it certainly sounds like something else is wrong.

There is no donwgrade protection. I asked software team, they do not know why the program shows this error.
Only alternative would be to send the unit to our offices, if you want.

For LHDC, UP5 is using older version of LHDC and we know it's a bit spotty with the newer version.
Can we expect new firmware to fix crackling and audio stuttering with LHDC V3 codec?
Still, what does the "Version Minor" parameter 0 or 1 mean?
I tried flashing 3 different up5, two of them are easily flashed down and have "Version Minor" set to "1". The one that cannot be flashed down has the "Version Minor" parameter "0".

Unfortunately doesn't know what else to try on your unit, would have to get it in hands of our service team for a check.

No update for LHDC planned.

I asked our software team about these values, I got no answer.

Are you coming out with a new model anytime soon since you did update the UP4 last year.

The UP4 22 was model made directly for Aoshida.
At this time UP5 is only Bluetooth amp in our production.

Unfortunately doesn't know what else to try on your unit, would have to get it in hands of our service team for a check.

My very loose assumption is that two or more battery counters somehow got out of sync. I'm pretty sure the battery isn't dead. It wouldn't make sense for it to be dead after so little use and proper storage, but perhaps one part of the UP5 seems to think that the battery is fully charged and another thinks the opposite.

So, one idea is that there's some kind of "factory reset" functionality be pressing and holding both buttons, but when I do this the screen just goes blank and nothing else happens, but iirc it's supposed to go through a more involved process and show the Shanling logo.

So, a few questions. First question is, would it make sense to attempt to reflash the firmware? That perhaps doing so could reset it out of its current funk?

And if you don't recommend that, what steps do we take from here? I bought it from the official shanling aliexpress store (or a store that purports to be official), but I don't have much motivation to pay for shipping back to China. Mainly because I don't feel confident that whatever gets returned won't similarly break at some point. I have a sneaking suspicion that, absent further firmware development that fixes outstanding battery issues, few of these units are going to be operational in 10 years time. So, is it possible to a refund? I could make a video of smashing the defective unit with a hammer or something...

There is no button based factory reset on UP5.

You can try to re-install firmware, if your UP5 stays on long enough for this.

If you do not wish to send in the device for warranty, there is nothing we can do about it. For refund, you can talk to the Aliexpress seller.

I have a problem with my Shanling UP5 - the weel is not changing the volume -
How to disassemble Shanling UP5? I know it's not meant to be disassembled, tell me the easiest way to do it please.

I disassembled mine accidentally. Had it vhb double side taped to my PC, when I took it off too quickly I ripped out the glass back xD glued it back on but it was interesting to see the internals. Not sure if it's enough access for the button tho

That is absolutely ridiculous that you don't have a factory reset. Why you're products have so many quality control issues? I really want too try out your units but all these issues i've been reading about it's just not worth it. I am very apprehensive though willing sometime ill get the UP4 2022 that's a really good secondary unit for my Fiio BTR7. Also the Shanling UA5 definitely that one is really nice.

Small suction cup on the back glass, just be careful about the cables.

Does it need to be on? I can see it in device manager when it's plugged in to the computer but turned off.
If it's set to UAC1.0 and correctly recognized, you can try to run the software update.
