I also have the M5s. Has a very nice AKM DAC. Love it.

Yeah the M5S is a really nice unit but it costs almost 4x more than the Q1 and more than the M3X. Reviews I have read indicate the M3X sounds better than the M5S and I do prefer ESS SABRE DAC's to AKM DAC's. Both are really not in my price range at their current prices and don't offer enough over the Q1 for my needs. Shanling's android DAP lineup is pretty full now so my hope is they will swing back to their MTouch DAP units. I wouldn't likely be in the market money wise until Black Friday so I will wait until then and see if there is anymore DAP news from Shanling between now and then. My eyes are bigger than my wallet right now and the wife would kick my butt if I spent that kind of money right now.

Given the very large hole in Fiio's lineup with the discontinuation of the M6, M7 and M9 a new M2X update could do very well even though it is not android. Not to mention that we don't know if Sony will be releasing an update to the A55 leaving the MTouch DAP's as the best options in the non-android market with the A55 being over 3 years old.

Rockbox has been ported to the Shanling Q1 and it works quite well to play music.

This is the forum thread with information and links: https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,53867.0.html

This is the manual: https://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-shanlingq1/rockbox-build.html (mostly missing screenshots and keymaps for now).

Note that it is only capable of playing music, there is no support for USB DAC, bluetooth, wi-fi and other advanced features of the Shanling Firmware. Rockbox supports dual boot though, so you can always go back to the original firmware if you need those features.

Playing music it does very well in the way you expect from Rockbox. Things like gapless playback, replaygain, bookmarks, playlists etc. are working great.

The Rockbox port is very new so there may be quirks, but I have been using it daily for a while and it works great. I have used Rockbox on many other devices so I am used to it, but I suppose it is for advanced users who do not mind trying things. It has near endless options to tweak things.

Attached is a picture of the default theme but some other basic themese are available.

Read through most of the info in the links and honestly I don't see any advantage to using Rockbox over Shanling's firmware for me. Nothing it offers makes up for the loss of bluetooth functionality. The question for @Shanling is will using Rockbox void the Q1 warranty if it bricks? I am guessing it will so even if I was interested in trying it I would want to wait until after my warranty expires.

I am curious as to what features people are missing from the current Q1 firmware that Rockbox offers?

Yes, loading third party system and bricking your device during it will void the warranty.

Yesterday I received my Q1 and I must say this is the most exciting piece of technology I’ve had in a long time! It’s just perfect and it sounds way better then my HiBy R5 or Fiio M6. I cannot emphasise enough how this device is sheer perfection in the way it is finished, lies in the hand, feels and the like. The FW (2.1) is also very snappy and a way better experience then my two Android players.

However, there is one problem. When I use it with my Fiio Q3 DAC the battery drains extremely fast: from 79% to 64% in 18 minutes. The Fiio doesn’t charge from the USB. Any idea what is happening?

Can only assume that the device is attempting to charge from Q1 or that its USB input demands more power to simply run (As it's using the XMOS)

Hello, how to listen music via DLNA? I found only how to enable in WiFi settings. I have DLNA server and no issue with TV and Android phones as clients.
But I cannot find in Q1 any DLNA-Client or some place where to browse

Q1 serves only as renderer, so you need different device to act as controller.

Where to find more details? On official page I found only manual for version 1.2, but DLNA since 2.0.
I know only server/player words. What is "renderer" and what is "controller"? I have linux DLNA-server with musics. No possibilities to play it on Q1?

You can check on DLNA categories here for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Living_Network_Alliance

You need to use some app on your phone or computer, that will manage the communication between server and Q1. example being BubbleUPnP https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bubblesoft.android.bubbleupnp&hl=en_US&gl=US

Hi all, my ipod classic has bricked and replacing the harddive will cost as much as buying an entry level DAP, so I'm researching what's available. I am particularly attracted to the Shanling Q1 because of it's price, portability and aesthetics. Maybe it's shallow but so many of the alternatives look ugly!

I have a couple of questions to people who have bought it themselves. Firstly, is the UI good? In particular how easy is it to navigate a list several hundred items long? For example if I look under artist, I'm going to be jumping back and forth throughout the alphabet as I pick new bands to listen to from my library. But I think the screen only seems to display about 3 or 4 artists at once in the photos I've seen. It could be extremely annoying to find anything swiping all the way through such a list. How do you guys find it?

Secondly, the only way I can get one is to buy through aliexpress. Their amazon store in my country is out of stock, and I've no idea if they are going to make it available any time soon. This makes me nervous because it effectively means if I buy it there will not be a warranty. Do any of you have experience of getting products like the Shanling Q1 this way?

If you think I am looking at the wrong player, I am open to your recommendations.

Many thanks for your help!

:)

What's your budget and what are the IEMs / cans you want to drive?
If GUI is important plus portability I d also consider a dongle, there are plenty of them like Paw S1/2, L&P W1/2 etc and you should always have some more or less up2date smartphone where you can run apps which won't have your mentioned issues such as UAPP

Besides that Q1 was a solid small player which even drove my Full Size Denons better than more expensive dongles, low tier DAPs

I don't remember how the iTunes library sorted folders, but in my case every album or song is just a few swipes away because of the way I organized my music on the hard disk. This is because most DAPs you can buy nowadays let you browse via folders in addition to the usual Artist, Album, Song, etc..

My music folders are organized into a hierarchy like this:

Genre -> Artist -> Album

For example:

Rock -> Fleetwood Mac -> Rumours

So I select Folders in the top-level UI, and Rumours is only four or five swipes away. Because of the size of the text in the UI, only the first four song on Rumours are displayed, but I always launch the first song, Second Hand News, because I always listen to albums from first to last song.

I don't know how you do playlists, but nothing I've found post-iTunes+iPod/iPhone, can match the Apple way of doing playlists. If you are running Windows, Musicbee should be your new jukebox for the Q1.

For an alternative, consider the stylish, xDuoo X20.

Good luck!
