Shanling Q1 - Retro-Styled Portable Hi-Fi Music Player

The "SHANLING Official Store" on aliexpress sells silicon cases for the shanling Q1.

Thanks for the info! I have checked aliexpress multiple times but they never had them. Very happy to see they are selling them now.

The price is also very reasonable but they don't seem to offer white and I have the white version. I will probably go for the green as it seems to be the nicest alternative. I removed the silicone around the buttons on the case that came with my unit. That way I don't hit the buttons when I am just holding it as they are now recessed and it works great. I used an exacto knife to cut out the holes and they are a little rough. I want to try again but with a hole punch tool so the holes are nice and clean.

I am playing APE files using the Q1. If I plug in to the 3.5mm analog out it's ok but when I connect to an External DAC or Topping E30 and FiiO Q1 to be precise, there are popping sounds. Anyone experienced this before?

This happen only with the APE songs or with all files?

Hi, only with APE songs. DSF files playing Native have some pop in the beginning I believe is normal. FLAC are OK. But APE will be constantly popping and buzzing.

EDIT: Every DSF files whether DSD64 or DSD128 all having pop when I Play / Pause the track. After playing, changing tracks will not have any pop but every time pause and play again will have pop. This is only when I plug in Q1 to the Topping E30 DAC. I use Raspberry Pi to the E30 will not have the pop sound. It is quite loud.

Every time I connect iPhone to the Q1 it will draw power from the iPhone to charge the Q1.
Is there anyway this can be stopped? in the manual it only says battery powered DAC will draw power from Q1 but for my case it is the other way around.

No, there is no way how to stop this. Q1 was designed to be used as a USB DAC with computers, we didn't optimize it to be used with phones.

I have a few albums that show up/play from folder view and even album view but don't appear when I search under the artist. The tags are fine, they appear on other players without issue.

Any solution?

There are two tags that contain information about the artist - ARTIST and ALBUMARTIST. I do not know which of these tags Q1 uses. Try filling in both of these tags with the same information.

Seems filling in ALBUMARTIST was the solution. Now I just need to go through and ensure the rest of my 700GB libary has ALBUMARTIST tag info...

Thanks.

What's the logic behind this quirk? Every other player that I've used up until now works on the ARTIST tag.

Yeah this was the first thing I noticed with the M0 and again with the Q1, albumartist needs the correct entry. It was frustrating at first as I have alot of compilation albums where the Artist and Albumartist entry are different often "Various Artists" was entered in the albumartist field. Those tracks without albumartist entries were all dumped into the unknown artist folder. It took awhile to figure out what was going on and to identify all the tracks that needed to by fixed.

So now I make sure the albumartist field is populated with artist name I want the track sorted by.

I suspect this happened when Shanling started developing their own MTouch OS and stopped using the Hiby OS. Shanling does seem to be resistant to changing these quirks just like their refusal to address the extra space after apostrophe's in some track names. I guess it is the price you pay for owning a Shanling DAP, luckily they make great sounding DAP's which helps me overlook these quirks.

When you switch to album artist sorting, it looks only at the album artist tag #and unfortunately ignores the Artist tag itself.

Having lived in Covid isolation for the last 15 months due to multiple pre-existing conditions I will be fully vaccinated as of Wednesday July 7th (3 days after my birthday). One of the big things that has kept me going all these months is my trusty Q1 and yes my M9 before it but mostly the Q1. Whenever things got overwhelming I would turn on my Q1, stick my amazing NAD Viso HP50's (a match made in heaven) on my head and tune out for a few hours. So thank you very much Shanling for producing this amazing little DAP, it actually helped preserve my sanity.

But now that things are looking up I am craving a new DAP, not because I don't still love my Q1 but a change is good sometimes. Given my current devotion to Shanling and my desire to avoid android DAP's it brings me back to the MTouch units. Given that the M2X was released more than two years ago if Shanling were to release an update I would be all over that in a heartbeat. Now if that isn't happening any time soon then perhaps an M3X would be possible but only if there is a big price reduction on Black Friday maybe.

I have a list of family and friends who would take my Q1 if offered so no matter what it will always have a good home.

You could always buy another Q1, in a different color. :L3000:

Or just buy a different color silicone case and save $125.00 :deadhorse: but if I am going to spend the money I want a different experience. As much as I love the Q1 the bigger screen of the M2X would be nice along with an upgraded DAC/Amp like the newer ESS DAC/Amp in the M3X. I thought about the M2X but spending that much more and losing half the battery life doesn't make sense.

I really hope there will be an updated M2X in the not to distant future.

I also have the M5s. Has a very nice AKM DAC. Love it.
