Shanling M6 PRO - New version coming Summer 2021
Sep 16, 2021 at 4:48 PM Post #781 of 959
For those of you who like streaming radio stations as I do, I found a a great app called Custom Radio Player to replace Tune-In Radio. I've used tune in for years but I've been getting buffering and the ads have started irritating me. With Custom Radio Player, there are no ads, streaming starts almost immediately and you get the benefit of the full bit rate the station is streaming in. You need to know what the stream URL is but many stations will give it to you if you contact them an ask.

Anyway Here's the link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.battlestr1k3.radionerd

Typing in the URLs can be a little fiddly on the small screen but you can import and export stations. So I'put the app on my phone and exported it to the SD Card and on my tablet so I can stream over to my BT DAC as well. If you're interested here's an import file that you can use to get you started with a few of my favorite stations complete with station cover art:
WSHE - She's Only Rock & Roll - Ft. Lauderdale
Classic Rock Florida
Radio Paradise
Atlantic Sound Factory
Swiss Groove
I AM Radio
Aardvark Blues Radio

If you find other stations you like, just type them onto the txt file following the format 1 station perline comma separated.

Have Fun

1. yes, 2nd that
2. not as heavy as the FiiO M11+ Ltd : )
3. yup, 'open' os platform is the only way to go. A shame it's a 4+ year-old version of Android ... @Shanling what are the prospects for you updating the M6 Pro (21) to a modern Android version? You know, like an Android version that's current as of 2021 ... to match the "(21)" : )
4. yes it does sound very good. I compared with the M11+ Ltd (AK4497EQ x2) and there's no advantage there. And that's coming from me as longtime AKM fan and owner (Micromega M-100).

Heartily agree: well done Shanling on the overall result - SQ is great. 🏆

@Shanling what is your plan for updating the M6 Pro (21) to a more modern version of Android? (see earlier post ↑ )

thanks!

That question has been asked and aanswered a few times. There is no plan to take the M6, 21, Pro, or Pro 21 to a new version of Android.. @Shanling may have a new answer now but that is the previous answer which has been consistent. Personally I'm OK with it. The device works great, sounds amazing and supports all the apps i need and want. Besides the shortcomings in Shanling Music App (which I can get around with UAPP & others) the only other thing I'd love to see is better battery management in standby.
Anyway, Generally speaking I am a perfectly happy M6 Pro 21 owner.

Let's hear what @Shanling has to say.

I second that for better battery management. Otherwise very happy with my og M6Pro.

Most likely not gonna happen. We would be glad to update it to anything higher than Android 7, but with our capabilities, we are so far unable to do so.

I use Shanling M6 Pro 21 (Firmware: V1.1) When I open Tidal (Master song only) it shows 705.6 kHz or 768 kHz on the upper right status bar.

Question:
Is this because of the MQA x16 with Hardware supporting by the chip DAC ESS ES9068AS? Causing the unfold of 44.1x16 = 705.6 kHz? (768 kHz likewise)

Thank you

Yes, this is showing the 16X Unfold of MQA files

Yes, this is showing the 16X Unfold of MQA files
However, Shanling M6 Pro 21 (Firmware: V1.1) with the USB Audio Player Pro or UAPP (V5.9.9.9), Listen to Tidal (with a Hifi subscription).
Song Title: MOZART Violin Concerto in D major KV 218, I. Allegro (MQA Remix 2016). That has an "Original Sample Rate" of 352.8kHz.

Question:

1)
Bit Perfect Mode On.png
Original Sample Rate 352.8.png

With the following settings:
Internal Audio Driver > HiRes Direct Driver
Internal HiRes Audio > Bit Perfect Mode >On
Internal HiRes Audio > Upsample > Off
MQA with Blue light appears. 88.2 kHz shows on both "Direct" and the status bar (upper right).
I understand that MQA was decoded (first unfold) by UAPP, not by Hardware from DAC ESS ES9068AS. On the other hand, I got downsampling from 352.8 to 88.2 kHz.
Why Hardware decoding/rendered is not working? But I got downsampling instead?

2)
Bit Perfect Mode Off.png
No Original Sample Rate.png

With the following settings:
Internal Audio Driver > HiRes Direct Driver
Internal HiRes Audio > Bit Perfect Mode >Off
Internal HiRes Audio > Upsample > Off
The "Original Sample Rate" of 352.8kHz changes to "Sample rate" 44.1 kHz
No light appears next to MQA. 44.1 kHz shows on the "Direct". But 705.6 kHz shows on the status bar (upper right).
According to the information from https://www.extreamsd.com/index.php/mqa , "When a DAC is detected that implements an MQA decoder (for example, the Meridian Explorer 2 or the DAC inside certain LG models), the MQA decoder inside USB Audio Player PRO is deactivated and MQA decoding is performed by the hardware. No green or blue led will be displayed in the app in this situation."
I understand that No light appears as the Hardware decoder/rendered is working.
2.1) Why 705.6 kHz doesn't appear in "Direct", and does the "Original Sample Rate" of 352.8kHz change to "Sample rate" 44.1 kHz? Note that "Original Sample Rate" doesn't show in the "Meta data".
2.2) In this situation, why is M6 Pro 21 upsampling the song beyond the "Original Sample Rate" of 352.8kHz? (refer to the photo of the "Meta data" above)
2.3) I understand that it should be a maximum of 352.8kHz, am I right?

3) Does M6 Pro 21 already support by UAPP?
Thank you, Shanling

We test our device with Tidal app, in which all files should be running at full 16X MQA, so 705 or 768.

How does UAPP work or what does it show as "original sample" rate is not something we can assist with.

I just installed UAPP V6 on my Pro 21 and it appears that MQA is now fully 16X unfolding in the UAPP app. Not sure about the DSD thing, I'll have to try different DSD files and see what happens. For now, for me, Neutron is still my go-to for local file playing.

Sorry for the late update. I received a great quick response from UAPP after sent them an email.
UAPP sent me a V6 (beta) that works perfectly with Shanling M6 Pro 21.

With Bit Perfect set to ON, on Tidal, the blue/green light next to the "MQA" disappear, and the sample rate in the notification bar (status bar on the right) states the MQA rendered sample exactly to the "Direct" rate. The sound is perfect no issue found. (see below)

Matching 705.6 Meta data.png

If "Bit Perfect" is set to OFF, I can hear a small popping sound. 44.1 kHz shows by the UAPP app (Direct:) but 705.6 kHz shows at the status bar on the right. This setting is wrong. UAPP told me that when turning bit-perfect OFF, the audio will be sent almost bit-perfect, meaning that the MQA decoder might sometimes see the MQA signal and sometimes not. This can cause crackle or pops. (see below)

Just bought an AKM M6 Pro on classifieds. I like the sound. The most impressive thing is the pitch black background with my Westone ES60. My last 3 DAPs, AK380, DX220, and M15 all had some audible background noise whether it's waterfall hiss, static hiss. M6 Pro even with wifi on streaming is totally silent. Too much of the TOTL Daps push the limit in terms of power, but not paying enough attention to match sensitive IEMs because lots of the TOTL IEMs are highly sensitive.

BTW, does the M6 Pro bypass Android OS resampling for CD quality Tidal tracks? I know MQA or higher sample rates all all bypassed automatically.

I love my AKM M6 Pro too. I believe they do bypass Android for CD quality Tidal tracks but I will let Shanling respond for sure.
