Shanling M6 PRO - New version coming Summer 2021
Aug 25, 2021 at 11:08 PM Post #751 of 965
The only thing I've noticed is, I always charged it on. Now I'm charging it off for the second time ever (first time was the day it arrived with all the hassle from the 0% battery) It's been on 34% for 20 minutes now. Lol. I guess something is not right
Helpful to hear from other owners whether their %-charged display is accurate. My device arrives next week and I'll chime in once it's on the charger.

Also helpful to hear from @Shanling on what they think about any inaccuracy in the %-charging display.

That's good. Note: LIon batteries have better health and a longer lifespan if they don't discharge below 50% often. Sometimes it's unavoidable but I strive to keep all my LIon devices above that.
I'll stand corrected, but I'm not so sure that this is the case with Lith-ion batteries I thought the prevailing wisdom to get the longest life was to let them go down to 20% or less and then recharge them to full. I'm not even sure that doing a quick charge to 80% on a regular basis is a good idea.

Mind you, these things can change, and it may be different for Li Polymer batteries.

Ok, so after the update, the album shows up (which is what I expected, and why I did it). However, what will happen when I take the card out - does the library lose the info?

Why on earth does Shanling think that no detailed user manual is required for these complex devices?? It's completely insane! There is always this assumption that people have prior knowledge and can just adapt on the fly. Well I've never had an Android DAP before so I am very much in the dark - I may be able to stumble through and come across things accidentally, but how do I find out about stuff I don't know exists?
So I took that card out, put another one in and did another 25 minute update, and sure enough, the library has lost the info on the first card. That makes it a situation where if you have a large collection spanning more than one card, you can either:
forget about the album art (until you play something, and even then it will be lost when the card is changed) – very disappointing in 2021 when it was okay in 2018 on a much less sophisticated device
or
take up around 30 minutes to update the library when switching from one card to another – completely untenable
or
install "some 3rd party app" which may or may not solve this problem.

So the question is: what are other people with more than one card doing?
Fooling around updating for up to 30 minutes every card change? I really don't think so. (play some Jazz, want to play some classical....in 30 minutes time)
Doing without album art? Seems highly unlikely, and VERY clunky.
That leaves possible 3rd party apps. Which ones are any good? And can they solve this problem?

I use JRiver Media Centre on my desktop, and was thinking it might be good for a DAP, but the reviews I have read have been scathing, especially for a paid USD15 app.

We have the page linked above explaining our custom parts of Android.
Unfortunately we do not have manual explaining basic functions of Android system, as that's something out of our scope.

For everyone who asked about my device, it has been working with only some issues

- if I'm at a streaming app and change to another one, or to uapp / shanling app, sometimes the sound starts to cut a lot and I need to close all apps I'm not using, not only pause them (didn't need to do it with hiby r5 s). I'm not talking about 10 simultaneously open apps. I'm talking two, eg: Qobuz and Spotify, Tidal and Apple music...
- if I try to use some lauchers like Niagara, everytime my device turns off, when it turns on, it loses the default app as the launcher I had set before turning it off and goes back to the original one, hiby didn't do it.
-battery seems OK, didn't need to reset. Still monitoring though.
-it is slow at charging. Bought a 5v2a qc 3 charger and it is slow.

Nonetheless, it sounds good =) even with things like Beyer t1

Thank you all for the technical support =)

- When using streaming apps, we recommend to close them before switching to other music apps. Otherwise it leads to issue with AGLO output.
- This is decision by our software team, to not support third party launchers.

But why is this the case? My 4 year old M3s shows the art without updating the library, so it's not like it can't be done.

Our app is in some aspects not as advanced as our older systems. As such, I can recommend to install 3rd party music player app, from team dedicated to developing them.

Can happen, bit random.

To be clear, your issue is only with album art not showing in the browsing, right? It works fine on now playing screen?

UAPP, Neutron, HiBy are some of the more popular apps among our users.

The page linked above could have a little more detail though. I'm not suggesting that this is your personal fault, but Shanling Co. has been pretty lazy with this, and just because the other manufacturers might be doing the same doesn't make it ok – it gives Shanling an opportunity for a USP (Unique Selling Proposition). Given that we buy these things to play hi-res music, it stands to reason that many people will have more than one card, doesn't it? Especially with the very high cost of 1TB cards (half the price of this DAP).

So how about saying somewhere in the marketing blurb that if you change cards you'll lose your library info.

However, whilst I am intensely disappointed about this, I may have thought of a work-around. What I noticed when I pulled out the Jazz card and re-inserted it, was that the library was still intact - as one would expect because it has not been updated. So if I put all of the files onto one drive (can't be a card because it's nearly 3TB of files) is it possible to update the library through the USB-C port? Would I have to connect that external drive to the computer, connect the M6 to the computer, and do an update that way, or is there a way of connecting a drive straight to the USB-C port?

If that can work, and leave the library intact when the DAP is disconnected, what would the library say if I put in a card that does not have some of the tracks on it? If it just says "Missing files" that's ok – I know they are temporarily missing.

Ok, so where can I learn about that, and why can't Shanling provide a link to that? I really do feel like I'm flying blind here, trying to work out how to get to Home easily etc. I shouldn't have to keep coming here to post what are fundamentally basic questions. Not everyone is experienced....

No, it will not work this way, it scnas the particular card, it can't connect it with some files from hard drive.
I'm sorry, our app is simply not build to work with 3TB of data over multiple cards.

You can try this one for example for very beginner with Android: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/android-beginner-guide-set-up-first-smartphone/

How to get Home? Which navigation method are you using? And did you checked the included quick start guide? That describes what gesture is for return to main screen.

According to this source you stand corrected : ]. Somewhat dated but I think the basic physics haven't changed much.

@Shanling: This is no big deal, just wondering if you have a second to respond. This is what I get with from my Pro 21's LED with a Bluetooth connection to FiiO BTR5:

SBC: Blue
LDAC: Green
aptX HD: Green
aptX: Purple

Shanling says on website page for the Pro 21 that aptX HD should be Yellow. Maybe it's a misprint or there was a firmware difference on some earlier or later shipping units--mine arrived with firmware version 1.05 and I don't see any firmware updates yet. No big deal as aptX HD works fine.

I must be thick or something. I cannot for the life of me get the Google Play Store app working. I'm signed in to Google (on the M6). I can get to the Play Store, and find Neutron (as shown above), but I cannot purchase it or download the Eval version because the buttons are greyed off - the only button that works is "Open in Play Store App". When I press that I get a spectacularly blank screen with only https://www.google.com/url?sa... at the top, and 5 tiny icons at the bottom. The 80mm in between is white.

So I either haven't got the Play Store app installed, or something else is wrong. I go to "Apps" ► Google Play services (like, it has to be in there right?) and all that this mentions is Storage, Permissions, Data etc etc. I would have thought it would say "Start the app" or something.

EDIT: after doing something accidentally I have managed to install the Eval version of Neutron. Well that's what the website says ("Installed"), but there is no mention of it on this DAP anywhere. I have rebooted it, but no icon on the home screen, and nothing in Apps. In Via ► Downloads it says empty, so I'm just guessing that nothing has been downloaded.

In "Configure apps" it says the default browser is Via. How do I change it to Google, and get an icon on the home screen?

By contrast, Neutron installed on my phone in under a minute, once I turned the Wifi back on (it went off due to low battery). There is clearly something not set correctly on this DAP. An instruction manual of some kind would be mighty useful. Some "Getting Started" stuff on Google play etc.

If you want to download apps through Google Play Store, you need firstly to install the Google Play Store. That can be done through the APK Pure app store pre-installed on M6 Pro. (and Google Play Services and Google Play Store are different things).

You have to download and install Chrome browser, it's not pre-installed.
