I was just comparing the released features at this point. I would expect this unit to sound as good if not better than the Cayin.

None of the items I mentioned can be fixed via a firmware update. Shanling has already stated that this is not an android DAP and it will not work with Spotify.
I mean you stream music, what would the need of having 2 microSD for.
Beside, almost all the DAP that have Android OS have lagging issues as far as I know.
What we have here is a TOTL product which most likely costs less than an entrance level DAP from A&K, and the SR15 costs you 700$ and they still use micro-USB for God sake......

Will this unit stream Tidal?

Not likely to happen. Any currently available applications do need a corresponding OS to make it work (iOS, Android) and since Paul mentioned M5s is NOT based on Android, I doubt the unit is capable of delivering direct streaming features.

We are trying to make Tidal happen. But it would be just online streaming.
To get offline streaming in third party systems, go and talk to music labels to change their policy based on fear of piracy.

@Shanling I'm guessing you have typo and meant to say standard "3.5mm" jack and not 2.5mm.

I remember when something of this size would have a full screen and do audio and video. Of course that's a bit more work than just creating a premium audio player. Just funny how this resurgence of DAP's has had the market do a loop back to the beginning where features we took for granted are now afterthoughts and are requested updates and so on, but the internals are leaps beyond what the players of old were.

Ok, changed the description to make it more clear.
In age, when majority of higher end players have both 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm jack, I didn't expected I needed to make this clear.

Excellent video player is in pocket of almost every human on this planet. The really needy ones picks tablets. No need to spend resources and push price significantly higher for feature that nobody needs.

It's same as camera market, why make tiny compact with fixed 28mm lens, when everyone has one in their pocket? Customers are either into ultra zooms or in interchangeable lens cameras.
(and Ricoh and Fuji are just too special)

And to the discussion of dedicated system vs Android - Each has it's advantages and drawbacks, it's up to you to choose.

Don't mind me. My highest end DAP was my Neuros or Cowon. That Neuros was a physical beast and had an fm transmitter so strong I could play music through fm radios in three different operating rooms. Completely illegal...haha.

Totally agree with you: just focus on quality sound and you'll sell. Don't care about video or camera. All I care about is quality sound and streaming via Tidal HiFi / MQA.

I would love if the new model would of had TWO microSD slots, or a single regular SD slot (those go up to 1TB for cameras now), that would allow for more travel storage. I have a 400GB microSD card, that is full. Once you start using hiRes files and DSD...it fills up quickly.

The Onkyo/Pioneer and Fiio devices were able to fit the space on the boards. Maybe next device.

Not a big fan of dual slots if it takes up space and increases costs. What if you add say, 64GB or 128GB internally?

Internal memory costs more to the manufacturer, vs adding an extra slot, or a standard size slot. I would prefer internal, but I doubt most would want to pay for it. The larger sd slot would probably change the form factor. No streaming, and a single slot, seems an odd mix in 2018/2019

More than one slot causes problems on many devices

Only if the use rockhip based processors. If a low power snapdragon 4 or 6 series chip is used, dual slots are not a problem. Again this a cost of production, vs potential sale price issue. Shanling is trying to get this under $450. So sacrifices have to be made.

I love the m3s, and may buy a 5s, to hear the new dac implementation

As was said, adding internal memory would push price higher than user would spend on upgrading his mSD card.
And then we also face problem, how big internal memory is wort it? 32GB is laughable, 64 just meh, and at 128 and 264 you are getting so high with price, it's not really worth it.

Of course Android based DAPs are little different, there you throw in basic 32GB to have some space for system, apps, their data, etc.
