Shanling M1: An iPod Nano Competitor / DAP || USB DAC || USB Transport || Bluetooth 4.0 + aptX || DSD

Sometime last week, my one year old M1 developed a power system fault.
While charging, it was getting warmer than usual - and was also getting warm while Off and unplugged.
Another symptom, was that I could charge it up, turn it on to see that it was charged, turn it off - and with nothing plugged into it, the battery would be completely discharged within six or eight hours.

Hi,

I'm experimenting the exact same problems with mine, how did you solve it ?

Hi,

I'm experimenting the exact same problems with mine, how did you solve it ?

To tell you the truth, I pulled the MicroSD card out of my M1, and put it in my M3s --- and haven't really plugged in, or used my M1 since then.

I picked up the first M1 I ordered, which I had given to my Dad, when I was visiting at Christmas.
Due to his Alzheimer's, he hadn't been using it, but it had been left on the charger - and the battery swelled up, and popped the back off of the M1.

That should never happen from being left connected to a charger. Scary stuff.

Actually I really like this player. But I'm not that much of an audiphile, more of a music enthusiast myself.

In that sense these are a couple suggestions I think would be great additions to the software.

1. As "Folder skip" make an "album skip" when listening from "My music" instead of the "File Browser".
The idea is to move from an album to the next, and the next.

2. Make an option to move folders from an OTG pendrive to the TF card installed (to avoid using the cable).
I used to move music to my phone this way and it is super convenient. Just an option to "Move folde to..." and choose a directry in the card's memory.

3. How about an option to sort albums by year instead of alphabetically?
If possible make it sort from latest to oldest, that would be awesome.

4. Make it possible to select more than 1 album to play. Right now I have to select 1 album, then move to another, and another.
I would like to navigate to an Artist, then select the albums I want to play and only play those (still keeping the album structure, songs order).

5. Being able to make custom playlist from the device would be great. I mean being able to write the playlist name, not just choosing from the available options.
How I see this, the option would be a wheel menu with the alphabet and you have to roll to the desired letter and press to write it (like on an old dial phone).
Would be super slow, but still an option worth having.

6. Sometimes my brain feels like the wheel rotates backwards for the volume, an option to inverse the way it rotates would be appreciated.
However mostly I got used to it by know.

Anyway, this is all just my opinion, no need to hate on it if you don't agree.
Regards.

Thanks for input, not sure if all of it is possible(mainly the moving folders from OTG seems like too much).

My concern is that when the volume is adjustable, having at 100 volume may add distortion. On the flip side when it is not adjustable the volume is set at a safe level so as to not introduce distortion.

As to your question, if I set my DAC/Amp to 12 O'clock and use the volume on my M1 it will increase and decrease the volume going to the DAC/Amp.

High/Low gain also affects the output of the DAC/Amp with firmware 4.2.

Seems we will need to look more into this, because with Chord Mojo, our benchmark for testing USB out function, volume is constant and changing volume or gain on player has no effect on volume of Mojo.
But when I tried with out unit of iFi iDSD BL, changing volume on player changed volume of DAC.

To your concern, since volume is set in digital domain and output is over USB, the 100% will be the cleanest signal.

Regarding batteries, if you have a problem, give us a message and we will see what we can do.

Would this same recommendation to set M1 volume to maximum apply when outputting M1 via bluetooth to an external speaker or Bluetooth headphone?

If your BT headphones or speaker have reasonable range of volume control, my advice would be to put player on 100%.

Got it. I understand if I'm asking too much from OTG then.

On to other things, I noticed that on the device user manual, "USB Port" is misspelled as "USB potr" (see the image below).
Also, the MicroSD (TF) capacity is written as max 200Gb but everywhere on the internet claims 256Gb. Which one is it?
Can I insert a 256Gb MicroSD card without worries? I was really intending to do so.

I'd guess that the manual was written when the max micro SDXC card size was 200 Gb.

If you go back to the early posts in this thread, you'll find where one user connected a Micro to Standard SD Card adapter, and was using a 500GB card with his M1.

I think so too, but better to be sure.

I saw that, it's super cool but no idea how it works. Technically it should be possible to accomodate the 256gb MicroSD if it worked with a 512gb SD card.
However I still need to get me the 256gb SD card (Approx $100), and I just don't want to risk it. I ruined SD cards and pendrives in the past by trying to use higher capacity than supported by the device.

In theory, we could write there 2 TB, which in theory should work and be done with it. For M1, current 400 GB micro SD card works without problem.

Reality is, that we write there the highest capacity available and tested at the time of launch. Not sure if it would be reasonable to change our graphics every few months, when new higher card capacity is announced.

And nobody else ever does, so you're not alone there.

And while OTG won't work with a drive, it should work with your phone. At least according to my file explorer on my Note 8 it should. Which is a plus because I transfer everything to the card on my phone. So between Hiby and file transfer it should be a nice setup without ever needing my computer. Something I haven't done with my Sansa Clip or M300. And speaking of small players, I can't even get win 10 to recognize my M300. One thing that forced me to explore the M1.

If I could get that play once/cue feature in playback I'd be able to use it for work. Pain in the ass to keep running back to the player to hit pause between tracks.

Okay. The theoretical 2TB limit is the same as high end smartphones. I know it's not set in stone because such MicroSD card don't exist yet.
It's great to know this, as it means no limitations under current MicroSD card technology.
