im wondering whats the difference between the two of them (in qualities), and what amps you recommend they're used for.

Listing to Crystal Method's Vegas now on a Nuforce HDP, the SA5Ks are actually warmer and punchier...  Electric guitars  (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai) etc. are also a blast on them.  For any other genres the HD800s are far superior.  The Sonys have a great 3D image but in a compressed space - the HD800s are more impressive here and the also its midrange is much more accurate - the sense of realism is pretty amazing actually...

"Worth" is obviously nebulous.

If you look at the massive price jump between the SA5k and the HD800, logic would tell you that the Senns are that much better. It's dependent on your budget, really.

SA5000 is no match for HD 800 in my opinion, the bass response of the HD 800 extends far beyond SA5000's or most other headphones I've heard and that makes the SA5000 sound thin in comparison. As for high frequencies, both can deliver huge amount of details.

i heard that SA5000 have unmatchable details :p
and it needs a less powerful amp does it?

ok. i listen to metal (dream theater, sonata arctica, nightwish) and jpop and gaga...which one is more suitable?

For the price, it's possible. Treble energy is often confused with a higher level of detail retrieval though.

They might be too fatiguing for metal, but they'll sound excellent with synths because of their characteristically dry mids.

I've got both and like the HD-800 more. The SA5000 is also very detailed and transparent, though, but the HD-800 has a much more natural response and isn't quite as warm.

i read lots of reviews
they all said sennheiser makes you enjoy the music, and it sounds as if you're in a giant field
and sony sounds like your in a school hall. they also said that theres so much detail in sony that a little flaw will make it sound crap...and that its so detailed you feel tired listening to it very soon :S

So you're saying the Senn makes the Sony sound warm in comparison?  I've never owned (or heard) the HD800, but when I had the SA5K's, I never would have described their sound as "warm".  So the Senns are even more neutral sounding than the Sony?

Thanks.

I was gonna say, the SA5k is really cold. The HD800 is just clean, transparent, and accurate.

One of the best currently still made, yes. The T1, PS1000, and Ed. 7,8,9 are up in the "super-high end", at least for dynamics.

The SA5k is probably the most detailed for the price, although the details may not be completely organic. Electrostats will beat any dynamic for details, any day.

so what do you reckon is the most enjoyable one with good detail and bass?
HD800? is that the ultimate? :p

In some cases yes the SA5Ks will sound warmer.  For some material (usually older or poorly recorded music) I find the treble on the HD800 can be difficult to tolerate...  On most (better) material the treble is just crystal clear...
