Received my HD800 yesterday from B&H Photo. Although they are brand new, the serial number is 120XX. People are posting much higher serial numbers for receintly purchased HD800s. Has there been any confirmed change between SN 12XXX and SN 16XXX?  Should I return these and find a set with a higher serial number? I would really like to avoid this but it could be done since the store has a 30-day return policy.

I use B&H Photo to purchase camera gear. Apparently they don't move much volume of hi-fi equipment. When were the first SN 12XXX availble in stores? Early 2011?

Na man, I had 15xxx and now I got the 16xxx. From what I've been reading here, the headphones have been pretty universal in terms of frequency response because of the excellent engineering by Sennheiser. Go and enjoy your HD800s and stop thinking about anything other than the music

Right.  That's still just a rumor.  My pair is 07XXX and sounds like every other HD800 I've heard.  I can understand why you wouldn't want old stock though--12XXX is probably old stock.

^do you also have two holes at the bottom of the headband holder (woo stand)? I wonder what those are for.

Just a quickie to say that I was given a copy of Amarra Hifi (retails for $49) and am now listening to it with the HD 800. My initial impressions are that it's a very welcome addition to my audio chain - it adds some more body and PRaT to the overall sound which is a great enhancement to the HD 800, especially in the bass region. Highly recommended!

Took mine to work today.  Enjoyed every minute, even right out of the laptop & using Pandora.

I sold my Lyr and have taken the first steps to rebuild my system. Listening to the HD800 now straight from my MBP. Yep, these headphones are still RAD.

I'd send you my 14xxx for comparison if you were in my neck of the woods.

No confirmed changes. Some variances maybe? But I've compared my pair's FR graphs (64XX) to newer ones and guess what? They look pretty much the same. I just listened to 14XXX today and guess what? Sounds pretty much like my pair. The only bigger differences are from units around 1000 or so.

Thanks all for the replies. I just want to get my full moneys worth (I paid full MSRP). With the serial number issue out of the way I can concentrate on the sound. After only two hours of use my impressions are that they are very good headphones. I am upgrading from HD650. There is big difference between the two. More listening time is needed to determine if the HD800 sound quality  improvement over the HD650 is worth $1500 to me.

No worries. What's your upstream rig?

I have a HRT Music Streamer attached (literally) to a Schiit-Asgard. These two components provided hours of enjoyment together with the HD650. I tried other set ups before settling on this one. Just the right amount of bass, mids and treble. I got tired of moving the HD650s from the computer rig to the TV rig. That was my excuse to buy the HD800s.

To me, the HD650s and HD800s seem to have no family resemblance except for the logo. They are 2 completely different animals, sonically, physically, comfort-wise.
By the way, that Woo stand sure looks nice and well built and stable.
Does it stay upright or get unbalanced if just one pair of phones is on it?

The Woo stand has a nice heavy base and won't tip without some real effort.

Also the rubber feet tend to stick to my desk surface, so it's really firmly in place
