Yes, but for me, a headphone has to deal with all kinds of sources, so 'yer' analytical beast might sound horrible from say digital radio but superb from a good amp being feed hi res.

If someone says in a review that a headphone has such 'good' resolution that poor recordings are awful, then unfortunately, most modern mixed music is going to sound awful with compression and distortion being made so obvious, so the headphone isn't really suited to the purpose.

It's something that hi fi people get so hot about and get onto the roundabout of better source into better amp into better headphone which means .... They need a better source into ........

That magic roundabout can be expensive and unfortunately, a lot of what they listen to doesn't need the razor like analytical properties of something ultra expensive imo.

It's all very well being a purist and worrying about amps, sources etc, but in the end, does most source material actually warrant it? By being such a purist, you can cut yourself away from 'normal' music listening and limit what you like to hear because of the gear, which to me is a bit daft.

The Sennheiser does a pretty good job of whatever you feed it. I can listen to crappy dab and mp3 as well as hi res and be perfectly happy with the hd650. Also, I can use an O2 and feel that it's absolutely fine. Even an e12a.

Now that to me, is a sign of a good headphone. One that produces pleasant sounds from most sources.

Does the hd650 pair pretty well with the Lyr2? I sold my Uber stack.

Another one I'm looking at is the Audio-gd NFB-10.33.

Yes, but Val2 might be even better with HD650.
I had HD650/HD800 with Lyr 2/Val2:
With HD800 stock I would go for Lyr 2
With HD650 I would go for Val2
If you need flexibility , go for Lyr 2
If HD650 is & will be your unique headphones, go Val2

Which portable amp/dac combo which you recommend to use with the 650s? It needs to be portable and include both functions. LESS than $300 would be ideal. Would plug into a Dell Inspiron.

Geek Out V2. Not ideal but will sound good.
