Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

If anyone has had a chance yet to try the HD-650s with the new Schiit Mjolnir2 amp, please share your impressions !

I'm not necessarily opposed to getting a (for me) single-purpose dedicated amp like the BHC/speedball to match the 650s, but OTOH putting the money into a amp that can elevate the SQ of all my cans makes a lot of sense. (And I only have so much desk space.)

Thanks !

I've tried them both balanced and SE, and to do them justice stick with balanced.

I still prefer the HD650's with my Elekit tube amp over the MJ2...

Bottle head is having a sale on the Crack... the speedball upgrade is only $20 till the 18th for a total of $299... I couldn't resist and ordered one a few minutes ago.

Did the higher cost of an Ember pit you off?

+1. Mark Knopfler's album, Shangri-La also is great for the 650 experience.
Honestly, I prefer a solid state amp like Polaris or BHA-1 with my 650. Gives it that extra sparkle and bass accuracy with my tracks. Tubes are great, so it's a battle for newbies to decide which to spring for. I like a quieter noise floor and more accuracy, so SS is my favorite for the 650.

I felt the extra $100 for the Ember wasn't worth it for me. Spec-wise the Solstice should be more than enough to drive the 650. I wanted to try the tube sound and the Solstice seemed like the cheapest way to try rolling tubes without sacrificing quality compared to cheaper tube options like the Bravo.

There is definitely a difference between SS and tubes... much bigger difference than I thought it would be. It's all up to personal preference.

Understanding that low-ohmic HPs need current, and high-ohmic HPs- need voltage, would mean that for HD650 one should look for the voltage. Yet, virtually all amps specs state only mWs. Is there any formula to calculate if the amp would be sufficient to drive the HD650s, or drive them better than another? I don't listen very loud, but listen mostly to classical music with sometimes huge dynamic range and short-timed outbursts.

Also, does anyone have experience pairing HD650s with a classic 1969 JLH class A, HP amp circuit?

Hey guys,
My left ear cup is making like a clicking noise when it swivels. It can only be heard when the phones are on my head. I checked an everything seems to be tight & nothing appears to be rubbing anything. Anyone ever have this happen? Thanks

once I actually get it in my hands and have had time to listen...   it should be very, very soon.......I have a huge collection of tubes to roll in it

Your time for "very soon" has expired - LOL

I'm sure we would all love to hear how your Glenn amp sounds with the HD 650. And also if you can mention which Glenn amp it is, approx. price, tubes used, and a comparison to any other similar amps would be helpful... after you've had time with it of course.

The latest version (same style packaging with HD 800's/HD 700's) sounds close to HD 600, and not as dark as earlier versions.

Yes.

I'm pretty sure that this is just a result of the breaking process. Mine did the same until I had handled them regularly for several months.

thanks MattTCG, hope your right. I checked everything a few times and everything is tight. The phones are about 10 months old. They are well maintained as well.

Mine are 4+ ears old.. still going strong... I ran into this same "issue" in the first year.  I don't anticipate it becoming problematic and mine went away after a couple of months.
