Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Hey guys, looking to grab the HD650 for my office and was wondering how it sounds with the Vali/Modi setup. Surely someone must've heard the pairing by now!

I think it would sound great. There are many people out there using that combo.

Looking for a closed back equivalent to the HD650 - any suggestions?

Yeah, that was my main point. Valhalla 2 output impedance is pretty low anyway... but it has almost 20% more power output on 300-600 Ohm loads than Lyr 2.

Ah ok.   You are correct, then.

And I keep forgetting about the Valhalla 2  and its lower impedance as well  :)

Not exactly an equivalent, but the NAD HP50s are voiced quite similar in the mids and highs - but they dont have the same bass impact as the HD650s.

Sennheiser Momentum. They don't have as much detail as HD650s, but have the same sound signature. Also IE800s have the same sound signature.

I actually just picked up the Momentums and I have to say I don't love them. They don't fit on my ears well and because of this I think they sound a little thin. Beyond me why Sennheiser didn't make the ear pads larger.

What about the Alpha Dog or Shure 1540?

These are on the list of headphones I would like to try, along with some of the Focal options.

If I were you I'd avoid Shure 1540s. At high volumes, treble becomes really irritating. Focal Spirit Classic are great, more "audiophile" than Momentum. Less bassy though.

I have a question. I have owned the hd650 for many years now. But what I'm curious about is, would you guys think they are still one of the best headphones on the audiophile market still? And would you guys still consider them, world class? Thanx! :-D

They may not be the best cans out there now, but they're still the best value and give most well-rounded performance, with comfort to beat.

Wow, I didn't know that, that is impressive for such a little box! Once I get some funds together I plan on getting a Valhalla 2 to go with my Lyr, best of both worlds.

I agree with that, not too long ago I would have said they were still one of the top headphones on the market but there have been a lot of new, very good, headphones out and some (HE560) just about to come out, being top dog is getting harder and harder.

I would say that they are one of the better bangs for the buck so to speak

Thanks for your very useful information and your helps. It seems that it is a very good choice, and the price is not high. Just can not find more information about pairing with Hd650, but you have given me :) Thanks!

yeah since you can get a pair for $300-350 used they are an unbelievable value. I think they are sort of the pinnacle of "mid-fi" cans before you make the jump to LCD, HD800, etc.
