Do you people believe the HD598 is true audiophile quality? How would you compare them with headphones within the same price range?

I have found the HD598 a gigantic improvement from the HD595.

1. Warmer sound
2. Very balanced
3. Excellent forward mid
4. Insane bass that goes deep and extends just perfectly

Overall I just feel that I get the most naturalized sound. Nothing seems to be too emphasized or recessed.

Could these be the perfect mid level audiophile?

Too many contradictions to your statements.  As for perfect?  If you like the sound why not.  But no, there are many at the price point that differ in sound that all depends on personal perspective.

Yeah, insane bass and forward mids is not balanced.
What I don't like about the 595s are the lack of treble and bass extension. Are they more extended on the 598s, especially the treble?

Wow, insane bass? What? The HD598 is barely bass lean or bass heavy. The bass is about as neutral as I've heard. The DT880 has more bass. In comparison, I found the bass on the K70x to be SLIGHTLY leaner than the HD598.

The midrange is definitely up front, and the treble is definitely leaning on the sparkly but sibilant free side. I call them the baby AKGs. They're a great headphone that I found more mid and treble centric than anything. To call the bass insane...What have you compared it to... only the AD700?

The HD598 is definitely what I call one of the best midrange headphones in the $165 range (that's how much I got them for on Electronics Expo). No way are they worth $250 though, that's competing with some SERIOUS mid level cans.

If it's true that the PC360 (which I own now) is a 595 with a mic, then I can surely say that the HD598 is definitely superior in terms of clarity and treble extension over the HD595. The HD595 has a warmer tone with slightly....very slightly more bass and more balance in that nothing takes a step forward, everything is more in line. That being said, the HD598 is very balanced, just takes a slight step forward in mids and treble. The signature is noticably brighter in the HD598 over the PC360 errmm...595.

Are they less grainy than the 595s?

Not sure what you mean by that. I don't find my PC360 grainy whatsoever. The HD598 feels more airy as well. Not as airy as an AD700, but close.

That's just personal perference then.

Want to know what I think of the AKG 701's sound stage in comparison to the HD598? Not even close to real. 701's sound stage is awful. I love the design and everything about the headphones, but man, the sound stage is just way off. Sennheiser nails it right on the head.

Holy Hangover! I've found my 598's to be way too bright and suffering from a serious lack of authority, ie. very little bass / punch.. Whattahell are you driving them with? :D

Edit: JCLau: they do not come in black, only one colour option available

That's because I wasn't talking about the PC360. Pretty sure this thread is about HD598s.
