Sennheiser HD 700: Officially Unveiled at CES 2012!
Jan 10, 2012 at 5:27 PM Post #226 of 3,545
Headband style of an HD555/595, driver housing of an HD800 with slight round curves of a HD600/650 while giving slight shape similar to the HD555/595 series. Honestly it looks ugly but let's hope the sound and price matches in this regard.

Wow, this thread is on the 16th page in just over 15 hours, impressive!

Is the cable detachable?

If it is is it the same connectors as the HD800?

Here I was hoping for a true HD650 successor and all they gave was a baby HD800. I was ready to dump my LCD 2 which still I still don't clock as many hours on as I do with my HD650 if the HD700 was going to have a pleasently coloured sound signature.

"Real" VW owners don't buy the cars expecting reliability

BUT pretty much anything newer than mk5 platform should be rock solid.  Some of their cars are even built in Tennessee.

Ok back to headphone-alia.

hah, didn't know VW had such a bad rep in the U.S. I own a mk6, feel pretty solid to me.

if he says that this pairs well with portable rigs, the portable market will take a quantum leap in sound with the ibasso dx100 being good, maybe you should get one and give us dreams about a rig this quality

nikp: I don't think Shure just got owned by any means, unless you happen to know something about the SRH1840 that everybody else here doesn't know. All we know is the SRH1840 is "extremely impressive", and as usual with Shure, it has a reputation of incredible performance for the price. If you have heard an SRH1840 somehow, feel free to win this argument by posting your impressions. Otherwise, saying "Shure just got owned" is... a meaningless (not to mention false) statement.

Let's be honest: Looking at the facts, at $1000, it doesn't look too good for the HD700 after FOTM wears off. If it sells brand new for $700 or $600 -- i.e. if Sennheiser allows it to sell for far below MSRP -- then I bet it will be a big success. Otherwise, at $1000 it just isn't looking very competitive from the numerous reports from people who really just... don't like how it sounds (sibilant, thin bass, etc.)

If the SRH1840 performs anywhere near what is expected of Shure's price/performance reputation, and sells below MSRP as it always does, then it will most likely come very close if not equal to the HD700 in performance -- at half the price brand new.

If Sennheiser DOESN'T price-fix the HD700 though, the HD700 may very well survive the competition. However you have to realize that at this price point, there's a LOT of competition from Shure, Hifiman, Audeze, etc. At $1000 the HD700 is really fighting a losing battle at this point, unless all the reviews of its unfortunate sibilance, etc. are completely false.

I expected a price of 500-700$ maybe.
Ill have to wait for these to drop a little or make a cheaper version

Maybe that's what the HD750 will be one day. Who knows how much that'll cost though.

Easy there tiger. Imo, the design of HD700 kills the Shure and looking at Jude's brief review especially the comparisons to the HD800, it's a winner in my book. And with the SRH940, I'm extremely disappointed with Shure.

Can I not prefer the HD700 over the SRH1840 based on looks and reviews from experts? What can I say, I'm a Sennheiser "fanboy".

That's how much the HD650 retails for MSRP (if your dumb enough to buy it from the manufacturer)

To be fair, I believe these were designed (and most likely are) a step up from the HD650's, so retailing for perhaps $800-900 would be a realistic upgrade price.

However, the hd650 can be had for the low $300's nowadays (which is half of retail MSRP), so I wouldn't be surprised to see the HD700 creeping down under $500 new at one point, and used might  be even more attractive at a used price.

Time will tell.
