Sennheiser HD 660S2 thread

So, just to post my experience with 660S2:

I'm new to headphones but not to high end sound.

I understand the recommendation to use these headphones with a headphone amplifier (and not taking anything away from that) but I have been using mine with my iPhone 13 mini and an Apple dongle: the headphone sounds great to my ears and I only need about 3/4 volume to reach my normal listening level (and I'm happy too at lower levels).

Moreover, I'm getting great sound when plugging into my Microsoft Surface Book 3, (13.5 inches) and I'm getting more than enough volume. The 6660S2's in this setting sound rich and full bodied.

(Remarkably, however, on my Microsoft Surface Book 3 (15 inches), which has more sophisticated hardware, they sound relatively anemic--I don't know why).

I'm reporting this so that individuals like me who might shy away from purchasing the 660S2 because they believe they need separate amplification, might go ahead and enjoy these headphones with their relatively low powered audio sources.

It is already to my ears. I am not a huge Sennheiser booster, but they got this one right. Pricey, but right.
Can't please all the people all of the time but the S2 is proving itself to be quite an all round performer and yes it just sounds... correct...right.

I won't be surprised if after some years (or sooner) the HD-660S2 will be widely considered the best of the HD-6** series!
Maybe...but should be IMHO. : )

What's the word on burn-in for these? 50 hours? More?
Right out of the box? ..... for virgin drivers, which IMHO can sometimes (but not always) initially sound constricted in their delivery with possible harshness in the highs and lack of bass and definition, I always find an album or 2 at volume helps loosens up the coil, surround and somewhat the diaphragm .
.......and from there on end brain burn in with regular playing, possibly subtle changes.

Would you take the s2 over the sundaras? And why? I personaly seem to enjoy the s2 more cause of the vocal perfomance and easy going treble

I had the Sundara's a few years ago. I thought they did everything well and nothing bad. But they also didn't do anything great. Great value and a nice all rounder, but there are lots that are better.

Personally I've never had the opportunity to hear any HiFiMan....

not a category, half the price of Sundara
...here in Canada the S2 when not on sale (reg.$799.95) is almost double the Sundaras, the Ananda are priced similar to the Sennheisers.

Two very different headphones with very different sound signatures. I would guess opinions would vary greatly.

What's amazing though is that the Sundara competes with something like a 660s2 at only $299. It's one of the best deals in audio IMO, alongside things like the HD6xx at $200.

Got my HD 660S2’s in the mail yesterday and have been burning them in. One thing I’m noticing that I didn’t expect is how much improved the forward depth of stage is. Definitely a different experience from the very left to right 6XX’s.

Too soon to comment too much on sonics, but bass texture and punch, lower midrange warmth, and a smooth yet extended treble are all part of what I’m hearing so far.
