I've been able to listen to HD800's, HD700's, HD650's and HD600's at J&R when they had their Wall Street store open. It's closed now for modernization. I was originally interested in getting the HD650 and possibly moving up to the 700 but after careful comparisons I found the HD600 most pleasing and got that instead. IMO, an excellent decision. The HD800 was something else but I wasn't willing to leave that much cash on the counter.

What I really like is the reselling value you get. So if you decide to buy the HD650 and want to upgrade later you wont have problems

What I really like is the sound that Sennehiser delivers on it's better open back cans, HD600 on up.

That's what I think, too, though the last time (before I bought them last year) when I got my hands on the HD 600 was many years ago.
 
Despite all of today's flagships, imo the HD 600 and DT880 Edt. 600 Ohm offer the best value among open-back headphones when it comes to price-to-sound-ratio with a personal preference towards the HD 600 as it provides the better sound stage reproduction out of the two (for my ears).

I have yet to find a place to audition a decent variety of phones, here in Kansas City.

I'm not a musician, but I went to Guitar Center out of desperation. I saw some Audio Technicas. Didn't look very closely, as I was interested in IEMs at the time, and they didn't have any.

I might go back and take a closer looker at the cans on offer. But I'm in no hurry, as I'm still supremely happy with the HD600.

The treble was too strident for me. I was dissapointed as I was willing to stretch the wallet to the 700.

Being newer to the Head-Fi game I decided to jump in with a set of Grado SR125e. After deciding that I like listening to headphones I wanted something more comfortable so I began the research. I landed in the HD600 and boy am I glad I did. It is just so easy to listen to. I still enjoy the Grado sound once in awhile but it usually just leaves me wanting. I have an Asgard 2 arriving today and I can't wait to hear the 600 really sing. I'm sure these will not be the last set of headphones I every buy buy they will most likely be the ones I never let go.

I have an Asgard 2 and my HD600 just loves them. What are you using to drive the 600's right now?

I use my Accuphase C-200 preamp or a Calyx PaT. The PaT sounds very good, the C-200 is a little flat.

The C-200 specs the headphone out at 0.4 V, not nearly enough to drive a 300 Ohms can like the HD600. I couldn't find a spec for the PaT, many portables can't deliver much power at 300 Ohms, but I suspect that it does much better than the C-200. The Asgard 2 can deliver plenty enough juice for the HD600's so expect a good time.

Got the Asgard 2 setup last night. Just awesome. It compliments the HD600 nicely giving them taught bass and articulate miss and highs without removing their easy to listen to nature. Vinyl sounds particularly amazing through this setup. I can't wait to get a proper DAC to get my Digital side sounding as good. Even just playing through an airport express with AirPlay it isn't too shabby. I attempted to take the crappiest picture possible, I believe I succeeded. iPhone with flash in low light. B&W at least makes it look vintage lol.
